    Hello again.

Hoping someone will see this thread and add something to help with study materials... The "Pass the ABO Exam" by Gary is well noted. I am ordering that this weekend.

ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!

This is a fun book on the different formulas opticians use as well as other basic concepts. Very easy to read and understand with fully worked out examples of formulas as well as sample questions.

Just found this gem from 20/20 Magazine earlier, pretty comprehensive in my opinion.

Hey would it be a good idea to get the tops manual if I already purchased the system for ophthalmic dispensing, is there really that much different material that it would be worth it.

My new Year's resolution is to pass the ABO this year. I am feeling pretty good about most of the material EXCEPT the math parts. I absolutely suck at math and it's very difficult for me to memorize formulas and how to convert units of measurement. Is there any free printable optical math practice questions out there? The only way for me to get this stuff through my thick skull is repetition. Also, do I have to memorize all the optical formulas or is it mostly focal length, spherical equivalent, Prentice's rule, Vogel's rule, etc??

Also, here are the resources I am using that are helping me:
LaramyK's OpticianWorks subscription and their Youtube Videos
Optical Formulas Tutorials (book) by Stoner, Perkins, Ferguson
VSP UUniversity's Acing the ABO Prep Course (free!)
Tests.com Optician NOCE Practice Exam ($40 and you get a PDF with 300 practice questions, digital flash cards, and digital simulated practice tests that can be taken over and over, well worth the $40 in my opinion)

There are people available on Pa to help. Pa Opticians. I'm no sure about VSP stuff, but if you have those other resources, you should do well! Several formula to remember. Prentice's Rule, Focal Length Formua, Know how to determine Slab Off values. Basic stuff

The basic test for ABO has no math you can’t do in your head, that’s why no calculators. You will want to know Prentice Rule, the 1/3rd cyl and prism direction type info. There’s really not that much math in totality. (Unless they’ve changed drastically).

You overestimate my head's math abilities.

Well, I was expecting to be able to use a calculator because the ABO website says there is a built in calculator when you take the computer proctored test.

There is an “on-screen” scientific calculator that can be utilized during the exam.
But I do see that some people are being told they can't use a calculator...

Totally get your confusion about the calculator for the ABO exam. It's a bit of a mixed bag with what people are saying, isn't it? Best bet is to shoot a quick message to the ABO for the final word on this. And maybe just brush up on doing some calculations the old-school way, just in case. Fingers crossed it's all smooth sailing on exam day!
