    Confused Broken Bridge

    Hey there,

Just wanted your feedback on this one.

Our optical policy on broken frames is "1 year warranty for normal wear tear". I dispensed a 17year old's RX glasses (Rayban) to her Monday. She comes in yesterday with the glasses and claims she was taking them off and they "just snapped" (the bridge in half).

She is a pretty high hyperope (+6.50)and our lab is synonymous for scratching/mangling frames with difficult Rx's. (If it were up to me we would've switched labs FOREVER ago). I did check them in and seemed to be in tip top shape when I called to let her know they were ready.

I'm wondering if she is lying (very possible) or my lab put a lots of heat/stress and may be the did just break (also very possible). I am pretty sure Suxottica will deny a deffective exchange due to the break. Ive put in a call to my rep with no response yet.

    In a pickle. Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.Click image for larger version.

Redhot Jumper The plastic is frozen and can not withstand .....................................

When new frames even the ones from s...ottica which mostly are made with good quality materials snap on the bridge in the middle of winter in a cold snap, it is usually do to fogging up.

They fog up when entering a building from coming out of zub zero C temperatures and people pull them off the face. The plastic is frozen and can not withstand the pulling off with one hand and snaps on the bridge.

Some simple educating customers to pull glasses off with the 2 hands will nullify the pressure and sell them some anti fog product, so the glasses will not fog up.

Come on Chris....A new frame breaks because the lenses fogged up?

I don't think he is implying the fog broke the frame, (unless he likes cheesy horror movies) but that the patient's reaction to the fog caused the frame to break. It goes along the same lines as with the patient that has no idea how the lenses got so scratched, nd then takes them out of their pocket and wipes them on their shirt, right in front of you.

How cold can it be in northern California? Forty-five degrees F.? Twenty in the mountains? It's eleven here in SE WI at 2:30 in the afternoon; I haven't had a quality plastic frame (ProDesign/Silhouette) break that wasn't at least three years old.

Besides, how corny is the name 'Ray Ban'? Sounds like something out of 19th century. Maybe it comes with a ray gun. In a Frosted Flakes box.

That in length................. is how glasses can break when fogged up..............

As I am from yesterday ................and you seem to be too I will correct your comment and clarify the matter.

You walk around outside in the arctic cold as expirienced these days your plastic material will get brittle even when brand new..................you get into a heated building after you enter through the door and you lenses fog up if not protected against it.

As you can not see where you'r going with fogged up lenses you take your right or left hand and rip the glasses of you nose to where you are going. The one handed removal of you glasses will apply a lot of pressure on the bridge of a plastic frame that was exposed to the cold and it can actually break. Do it several times a day and it can actually happen.

That in length........................... is how glasses can break when fogged up.

Correct my comment? Who said when glasses break in the winter " it is usually do to fogging up."? That comment is as valid as if I say cats usually cause glasses to break in Springtime. When one runs in front of a person, and especially if it's a black cat, they get startled, throw their hands up in the air and accidentally knock their glasses off their face.

There's a big difference in "usually" and "can" break. And as Robert pointed out, the OP is in California.

Not sure I buy the "fogging" theory either. Has to be abuse by lab or patient...Are there any other signs of overheating on the frame (small pits/bubbles throughout the acetate, etc.)? If so, the lab is to blame. Regardless, I would replace at n/c this time...

Another case of the automatically combustible frames!!! Love it when that happens! Surprised they didn't try to tell you that you let her go out the door with them like that.
