    Lens for a pilot

    Hello!

I have a patient who is a pilot and isn't happy with his trifocals that he's been wearing for years. The problem is that when he looks up at his controls, he has to move his head WAY back in order to see the controls. I told him about the double bifocal seg but he was not happy with having to lose his intermediate of his trifocal which he relied on as well. I heard from someone that Essilor had made a progressive that had an add at the top as well as the bottom but my lab didn't seem to know anything about it. Does anyone know of a lens that exists that would help him? Thanks.

There are occupational bifocals and trifocals, where the seg is at the top AND the bottom.

not that I know of...it seems you have to choose bifocals or trifocals, but they do have a few different sizes. I think its only in cr39 clear. Check with your lab or lens manufacturers.

The last time I looked for anything like this I found it being made by X-CEL. I found it in Frames Data LENSES product guide, winter 2007 issue page 110. It is exactly what you are looking for. D-7x28 for lower and D-28 for upper....in glass some colored glass and also pgx.
So the wise thing to do here is check with your lab and get your cost before you quote a price to the patient. Make sure you charge enough for your efforts also not just the product. It is a specialty and low demand for it so it will take a while to get it for him. But if you can pull it off he will think the world revolves around you.

^Quadraseg was the old name used for that wasn't it? They are rather pricey. I've used those once before, but I cheated. I had an old press-on bi-focal in the appropriate mid power of 1.50 that I measured up and applied to the tops of the lenses. It was cheap, easy, and the patient was ECSTATIC about the new ability to see at mid-range above his head (electrician).

Also a light vermilion tint can be beneficial for pilots :)

Perfect easy solution, thanks! I have a couple electricians and IT guys with the exact same issue. I'll have to try out the press-on with a couple of them.
