Not wearing new glasses at dispense...

I see this all the time, tends to be kids and 20 somethings... pay for a new pair, they def need it to see, dont have contacts in.... yet you get them all adjusted nice for them... and they just fold them up and put them in the case to leave.

Im curious by nature, and wonder why anyone does that.

You're trying to apply logic to an illogical situation, there doesn't have to be an answer that makes sense.

I've had teenagers do this; parents got them the glasses but they don't want their friends to see them wearing them.

I experience it all the time. I always call people on it. I usually hear, " I only need them to see" to which I reply, "If you aren't wearing your glasses and you're heading out to drive your car home, thanks for the warning, I'll stay off the sidewalks." That usually gets a chuckle and they reluctantly wear them out of the office.

I don't get it either, people are plain dumb. Who doesn't want to "see" all the time?

I didn't get my first eye exam until I was 20. I was slightly myopic. Fast forward 10 years I'm more myopic roughly -1.00 OU and I still don't wear my glasses all the time. Most of my life is in a "near" environment which allows me to ignore the distance which I can't see clearly. I do however wear my glasses to drive and do not feel comfortable driving without them. Vision is not worth the same to everyone and for those who didn't receive glasses until adulthood, its hard to get used to something on your face. I can recall a lot of times where patient claimed they were blind and are unable to see without their glasses only to find out they have a quarter diopter of cyl.

It's not vanity -- it's peer pressure. And probably a wish not to be beaten up on the way home from school.

Probably, but I'm seeing this much more now with adults than with kids. It seems, around here at least, that glasses are fashionable to wear, the nerdier (is that a word?) the better.

My son is a -1.75 in both eyes and wears his glasses to drive and if he sees a movie. Almost never otherwise. He watches TV mainly on his computer so no glasses needed there.

I see this all the time with teens. I know why they do it but I still say "It makes me very happy if you wear them at least until you get in the car" and they sheepishly put them on.

The way I see it (no pun intended) if you are not working in the eye care business, glasses suck. How many pairs of white planos do you sell in a year?

My 16 year old son is a -.75 OU and rarely wears his glasses or contacts. It makes it hard to feel sorry for him when he complains of a headache after not being able to see well at school.

Interesting. Any reason why? You'd think the contacts would be alright, even if he didn't like the spectacles...

He can tell and that is all that matters to him. The last thing in the world (eliminating a STD) he needs is the care and feeding of an appliance that is not relevant to his social networking life.

Like previously stated, I'm sure a good percentage of patients in the 16-21 age range under 2 diopter of correction only wear correction when it's a necessity such as driving, or school work... not as much as a fashion statement. They can simply accommodate at this age well enough to get without the need to wear them constantly. Yes, we as dispensers know that they probably should wear them consistently to adapt to a script change and such but that's how the age group functions.
