    Surfacing Cleaning Routine

I run the backside and AR Booth at my companies full service lab we've been having an issue with finger prints on the lenses but when I try to clean them the lenses are scratched from rubbing on the raw poly. I was wondering what others processes are and how I can improve the quality of my lab.

I assume you are cleaning the backside with a hyper clean tissue and 91% alcohol? This should take care of most of the issue. Most scratches on raw poly will cover up when the spin coat is applied. I suppose the cleaning cycle on the backside coater might not be cleaning the lenses properly, but if you use the tissue and 91% alcohol it would take off any normal finger prints.

If this still occurs than I would find out who touches the lens last and find out what's on their fingers. The only thing I could think of would be some type of oil or corrosive substance on their fingers..hopefully nobody is using acetone to clean the lenses before the spin coat as this would melt the fingerprint into the lens.

Also how long do the lenses sit before they are backside coated. You may want to clean them ASAP when they come off the polisher, water and an Air Dryer usually does the trick.

Hope this helps, since I never have any problems.

In my wholesale days, we immediately took all poly from the surface line to the coating room. In the coating room the lense was cleaned with alcohol and a lint/dust free tissue and then coated. The lenses didn't sit around long before being coated.
