Crier High minus lens type and material help needed!

Have a patient with the following rx:

    OD -17.50 = - 2.00 x 152
    OS -16.75 = - 1.50 x 020
    Refratced vertex 13.5mm

New frame vertex is about 10mm. Using Darryl's Opticampus Calculators, I come up with an rx to order of:

    OD -16.49 = -1.76 x 152
    OS -15.82 = - 1.33 x 020

I have had him in 1.67 bi-concave lenses in the past. In 2012, I put him in 1.74 conventional lens done by Digital Eye lab. The frame was bigger than the previous pair, 53-20 vs. 48-19. He did not like the thickness of the 2012 pair. We discussed at length what going larger does to edge thickness when he ordered that pair.

Today's frame is a compromise at 50-19. He asked about going back to bi-concave to reduce thickness. I explained the lousy vison off axis, which he understands. I would like to put him in 1.70, conventional grind, but I am finding that the power kicks me out of most power charts that I have looked at. Most stop at -16.00. I have not called labs yet to see if they can "FUDGE" the range or not.

    Suggestions?*

*Please don't any of you wise guys say put him in contacts.......he has them!

Some labs are doing freeform including flattening around the periphery that amounts to something like a blended myodisc... how about something like that?

That is a good point Shanbaum!

I should have mentioned that his last pair had that done to the edges. It was a very subtle, smooth blend.

Santinelli variable bevel mode trims thickness. Or...use step bevel. With a careful edge coat, you'd be surprised.

The issue is blank thickness and blank back curve. Not enough material to establish BTC Try the new 1.74 from younger. Very "meaty" blank for lack of a better description

Perhaps more to your liking would be Quest.

I would say a 1.74 from Younger as well you can run up to a -18.00 on the 1 base so if you have the ability to cut a foam lap or your laps go up to the high curves it should be no problem

That is why Ice-tech is so intriguing, they make their own blanks for the higher powers, even in 1.74. Although Quest can too, I have had better turn and quality from Ice-Tech, especially with how thin they are. Sorry Fezz.

    Why are we going conventional?

Shamir Autograph II SV As Worn will work just fine.

There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
