I may regret this but here goes....

I have this co-worker who is having a birthday. She refuses to celebrate it however due to the fact that her husband left her on her birthday two years ago. (He left her a note card on her mirror)

This kind of reminds me of those who say that they cant celebrate their birthday anymore on Sept 11th because of the attacks. Life has to go on but how do you tell someone that?

Sometimes children who were born at Christmastime are allowed to pick another date to celebrate their birthdays...so that they get their "special" day. When they get older, they can return to the "real" date if they choose. They know the selected date isn't the REAL date of their birth, but this allows them to experience what most people take for granted, a day of their own. Maybe your friend can do that too, because birthday celebrations are also a means of honoring the birthday person. Most of us could use a little more "atta-girl" or "attaboy" attention. Tell your friend that if her birthday gives her a bad feeling, she should pick a NEW day, to start some better memories! If its the whole idea of birthdays that bother her...she can do what my husband does....celebrate the anniversary of her XXth birthday....his 39th was his last bday, he says. Next month he will celebrate the 17th anniversary of his 39th birthday!
