Good day.
Right now i'm considering a move to Canada where my girlfriend was offered her dreamjob. I've been working as an optician and a contactlens specialist (8 and 6 years respectively) and have my opticians and contactlens fitting diploma here in the Netherlands. The market is deregulated meaning optomotrists and opthalmogists are mostly busy with medical/special cases while refracting and prescribing Rx (including contactlens fitting) is free for anyone to do. I do however have my diplomas in order (opticians school 4 years and contactlens fitting another 2). So my experience includes prescribing Rx, lens edging,. etc as well as fitting of RPG/(Si-)Hy lenses in all their varietys (toric/multifocal) including Ortho-K. Only exception is scleral and keratoconus lenses which are usually reffered to a specialized practice.
I've got a lot of questions, but mostly I would like to know how good my job chances would be and if I need to re-train? It's my understanding that prescribing Rx is only for optometrists in Canada. I Already send out an e-mail to the Opticians Association of Canada so still waiting for an official reply there.
But it would be nice to gather some tips and advice to help me on the way.
