I have a 15 year old patient with an rx OD:+4.00 sph OS: Plano. What is the best material for her lenses? I was thinking 1.67 for the od and poly for the os. Does that sound crazy?

First you must be initiated by passing through the crucible (Plt 148 PI In 1976 it was Elliot's Beach ;).
What made you want to mix materials?
Don't take this as threatening. We just want to make sure you're an optician.

Go for it, 1.67 and poly have the same abbe value and the impact resistance is going to be similar as well with the thickness a +4.00 will have. I would just make sure to use a relatively equal A to B ratio with minimal decentration to provide the best cosmetics for that right eye. Use an aspheric for sure to minimize magnification and also keep in mind there is a limit to how thin you can make the right lens, the left lens has zero limit to how thick you can make it so to even things out you may want to surface a thicker plano.
I would want more info on her acuity, OD/OS before I make a recommendation. Iseikonic design may be in order which could change materials, thicknesses, ect..
Od: Uto
os: 20/25
ou: 20/30--
Contacts!
I agree but she won't
Some will disagree for safety reasons but I'd go along with Make's suggestion for cosmetics staying away from knife edge.
1) Best method.....contact lens O.D. Failing patient co-operation.....
) 2nd best IMO would be a 1.6 index lens(not poly) to afford less chromatic aberration for both eyes, softly tinted, AR coated ou, and thickness/base curve balanced. Aspheric OD might handicap peripheral excursion gaze, which 1.67 index would exaggerate.
Eyes wide open
