Arrow Plano sun in optical shop

is plano sun a key part of your optical?
how many Plano sun do you display?
    what % of your stock?
    Is it a growing segment?
    is it worth the investment?

my opinion is that it is definitely key. It is growing and i show at least 250. About 25% of frames shown, in their own part of the shop.

We keep a fair amount in stock, most with the idea that they'll be RXed. No low-grade stuff; all high-end designer to get the women's attention and hardcore durable to get the mens' (and some women's) attention. Primarily Wiley-X and Ray-Ban with a smattering of brand-labels. Most plano sales are to CL patients, who appreciate the convenience and are willing to pay a little more for the assistance in the selection process and the peace of mind knowing they're getting something more or less "tailored" to their needs.

Couple of comments. No optician should let a customer leave without a discussion regarding sun protection. Educate the customer and then sell sell sell. UV protection. Polarization. Sun protection while driving. Sports. Planos work great for the person leaving with the contact lens prescription. Explain that the junk glasses in target/walmart are junk. Sell sell sell. Again, planos work great for the person leaving with a contact lens prescription. And offer real sunlenses. Not the dip crap in your chemical tank.

I carry 500 pair of Plano suns. Brands like costa, Maui Jim, RayBan, Oakley and more. You will find it brings in the young kids and adults and they will come back when they need an Rx in dress wear and Rx sun . Their is a great profit opportunity in Rx sun-wear.

We carry about 100 pairs of Plano sun or around 10%. We're constantly trying to grow that part of the business. We don't carry any name brands but choose our sunglasses from the companies we get our ophthalmic frames from. We offer discounts to contact lens purchasers and only carry one line that's non rx due to being made of wood. Those are flying out the door.

We carry a variety of plano suns, however, every plano sun we stock is RX'able. We don't stock any plano suns that aren't RX'able.

Question please, do you all edge lenses into the Costa's, Maui Jims and Oakleys yourselves?

Seriously? Aren't they discriminating against people that fall outside of their rather limiting rx abilities?

As far as maui's, speaking from experience, edging them using our own lenses is kind of a disservice to the patient, the whole point of buying a Maui is to get the entire maui package am i wrong?? i see amazing out of my maui's, even comparied to my trivex/crizal sun/xperio which is probably the closest i could get with our lab :)

Never sold costa's or oakleys (not RX just plano) so i'm not sure on those, oakley's crazy mirrors and stuff though are just kind of their own thing arent they?

If the customer is paying for an Oakley the get authentic Oakley. Same with costa and Maui. Costa's contract prohibits anything but a costa lens going in their frame.

Don't you all find the Rx programs with Oakley, Maui, etc. to be way overpriced at the wholesale lab level, and underpriced at the retail level a la MSRP?

Ridiculously so. I'd rather sell a Ray-Ban and have our lab RX it themselves than deal with the Maui/Oakley headache.

    I would not sell a Ray-Ban, period.

Send them on down to us, then. Excellent durability, instant name recognition, good price point. They sell themselves, and they do so in droves.

In some cases, the sunglasses companies contract with such labs as Pech and Digital Eye to produce the rx lenses. I bypass the middleman and get them from the lab.

I send them to the mall or the internet. Those are the only places people should be buying those things.

Actually, we have something for every budget but we prefer to sell frames from smaller companies and try to differentiate ourself from chain store brands. We used to carry Ray-Ban and it did sell itself however we felt we were selling ourself short by carrying it. Whenever someone comes in here now and asks for Ray-Ban or Versace or what have you, what we hear is "help! I have no idea what I'm doing" and use that as an opportunity to introduce them to some stuff they've never seen before. If they still want Wayfarers then I point them them to the mall or the website where they can get colours that Lux wont allow you to sell.

There are NO...repeat NO labs that do the unique combination of quality, optics and turnaround that MJ & Oakley do.

    No one. NADA. Period.

Whoop-de-do on the Oakley thing. What's so special about Oakley?

I guess the Maui's at least use bigradient mirror and special polarizing and stuff, but how is the back surface AR? It used to be kinda single-layer-y.

And what's so special about Maui's polarization, anyway? Can't a nice KBCo or NuPolar get the job done right?

I'm not really moved by Maui either. I just re rx'd a pair of prescription Mauis for someone. Used an Image progressive by Younger Didn't put a gradient mirror on it but client said they didn't care for it anyways. She loved the new ones.
