Quebec Opticians defeat optometrist in use of non-licensed personel

The Quebec Order of Dispensing Opticains has won a court battle against the Quebec optometrist, and has shut down the illegal use of non-licensed personel .....taking measurements....dispensing eyeglasses and making eyeglass adjustments. While this is a good thing it has left a bitter taste in my mouth about the future realsonship of opt and optom. Current data showes an increase number of opticians hired in optometrist offices. Illegal is illegal and the Order of Optom should have taken their own stand on this matter (so said the judge). The future will tell how this works out.

I agree. This will at least create a standard standard for the general public, and reduce confusion about who can legally be entitled to dispense.

A very bold and innovative judicial decision within Canada, if you consider Quebec part of Canada.

Hmm, what's this, a reg body enforcing regulation ? Perhaps they'll make an instructional video !

Maybe membership of other provinces could insist their regulators take some CE credits too !

Wouldn't hurt those public members either to earn some CE credits to learn to regulate too, might even learn something about optics!

It's the law in my state too. I do follow it, and we have always hired licensed opticians...

But does it make sense in this day and age, when patients can order their glasses online with no supervision? ..And no one gets censured. Can an optician delegate tasks to unlicensed persons? Do they in fact sometimes do this?

...so why are we throwing stones at each other?

    It's a pyrrhic victory.

    Agreed!
Grateful to be what I am, and not pretending to be someone I am not!
