7x28 tri in 8 base Oakley issue

7x28, polar, 1.56, silver mirror, backside A/R - Oakley Fives Squared; The patient describes his vision OD "blurry", and says OS is fine. RX is good, PD within tolerance, and there are no visible defects or distortion. Patient is currently wearing a Varilux S 4D in a 6 base frame with no complaints. Any ideas?

Highline, welcome to Optiboard! A few first questions:

what is his RX? Is it new? and what are the base curves of the Oakley pair, and his Ophthalmic pair? Are they the same RX?

So going from a progressive to a bifocal? Plus I did not know that oakley did bifocals in their sunglasses.... The wrap is probably a big issue with the bifocal....

That is a lot of cyl in an 8.5 wrap. Although people can tolerate 4D total power at 8 base, you are over the edge of maximum power with an 8.5 base. The issue with sunglasses is that people often don't wear them full time this time of year. Although adaptation and good vision are possible, it could take a week of wearing them full time. A lot longer, even months, if wearing them only part time because he is switching back and forth.

You will get faster adaptation in a Free-form Progressive lens with wrap compensations such as the Autograph II Attitude. It's possible your patient could adapt the current pair, but he may have to take a long vacation in Florida.

Another option is to find your lens in 7 base, but I don't know if Tri's come in 7 bases anymore. A FT-28 might though, but I have used 7 bases in the past, but its been year's, I have fit only Free-form Progressives since 2005.

I think we'll go with the free-form PAL - Thanks for the feedback!

You can check for warpage using a thin polarized filter if you have one, it will show up as black waves. A lens can warp if its cut too big, or if it sat in the frame warmer too long.

these cant be Oakley authentic lenses in the sun frames as they do not do tri focals at all.
