Need help from Mavens familiar with AIT dual Chem Temp unit

I need to add salts. Just purchased fresh from BPI both crown and 16 Hr Photo.
Have rod to measure liquified salt depth. Don't understand if rod is inserted through top of unit (over cover, through "peep" holes with sliding covers), or when unit has trays withdrawn, w/o cover.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

    Barry

Liquid salt depth should be deep enough to cover lenses in tray, plus about an inch or so over.

BTW, what is Salisylic acid used for in cem tempering?

Barry - it helps keep the salts from foaming during the first melt (conversion of powder/crystals to liquid).
