    Here's my new message...

To the eyewear buying public at large:

A really, really good pair of glasses, absolutely top shelf, something you might use almost every day for 2-3 years; sold, serviced and designed by a truly competant eyecare professional, costs less than:

Half of the money you put down on your last car lease!

I like it, except for the new car lease part. Most of the folks in my area drive tractors, and those run about $200k plus.

No, seriously, I'd rather relate it to something less expensive, such as a cup of coffee.

Sometimes they would like it to cost less than half their lease payment, quite frankly because they don't have another $400 available thanks to their lease payment

I was thinking the down payment, as opposed to the lease payment ($2,000+, as opposed to $400)

    ".....costs less than:"

    * A house call from a plumber!
    * A service call from an electrician!
    * A visit for a checkup at the auto mechanics!
    * A night out with friends at the local chainnamelame restaurant!
    * A months "Dumb" Phone bill!
    * A visit from the "Nerd Geek Squad" to hook up your overpriced HDWHO/Cares TV!

    Should I keep going?

Interesting idea, but 'a truly competant eyecare professional' would know how to spell
    'competent'.

I tell clients this, and it's true, " There's nothing you use every day of your life more than your glasses. It's easy for you to justify getting as good of vision and as much comfort out of them as you can." This simply implies *get the best you can afford*.

This relates to everyone, not just phone bills or car purchases.

+1............24/7. This means: instant justification of funds spent. IMO, Barry......as an industry, we fall flat on our faces, when it comes time to reinforce the justification(aftercare).

Car leasing is another burden on the consumer and many of the luxury cars are on leases. They have a pretty high "put down" amount on a new car lease.
Therefore would not a top of the line pair of glasses at that price sound expensive when consumers are bombarded with inexpensive on-line glasses advertising ?

People spend (IMHO...throw out) money on cars and car leases because cars ring their emotional response chords. They really don't analyze the real metrics.

But given that, my statement holds. We need to make eyewear purchases more emotional.

Only in the US would you see the words "burden" and "luxury" in the same sentence.

Were you aware that the average income in the US is about $52K?

Many households struggle to find the money to afford food and medicine, not to mention rent/mortgage payments etc.

Downpayments on a car? Lease payments? You have GOT to be kidding.

Most of the folks I know are driving "beaters", especially during the long winters here in MN.

Sounds suspiciously like this came out of Romney's mouth at that infamous dinner back in May. Are you referring perhaps to the 1%? Because the 99% can't afford it.

Based on COL alone, if people are in a poor area of the country, then their lease buy down is less as well, and the eyewear is reduced accordingly.

    I stand by this statement.

Then when the pols say they're gonna bring jobs, make sure they're ones that require skills, and are not just low pay.
