Imagine people that think they are so ugly that thier appearance will be enhanced by a tattoo.

Maybe phychiatrists should be a numerous and inexpensive as tattoo parlors.

Really strange part is most civilian tattoos are done while the customer is sober.

    I'm with you Chip.

Why do people even get Tats?

Do they not like the way they look? Lets be honest guys. Would you rather look at a woman in the buff who is all tated up. Or do you like SKIN?

    I'm sayin SKIN TO WIN

Then there's the image of the "tatoo Grandma" ........ I bet the Grandkids like that....... NOT!!

PS - One time Tatoo's were for sailors. God I wish they would have stayed there !!!

I'm certainly not trying to get everybody fired up on tuesday morning. Just saying I don't like all the whining. "waaaaah that hot coffee I bought was too hot and it burned me when I held it with my knees while trying to text and drive and now Im going to sue you". "waaaaaaah english class is so boring I had to play with my ipod just to stay awake, if the teacher was more interesting I would'nt break the rules". Stop whining. Hold yourself accountable. Blaming somebody else for your troubles doesn't fix anything. If you don't like the rules, change them! You get what you give. Imagine if mayflies sat around complaining how hard it was to find a mate, instead of just going out and making it happen. There would be no more mayflies.

I don't have a problem with saying "hold yourself accountable". I *DO* have a major problem with saying "we have a moral code of conduct and it requires you to (insert your favorite forced desire)". That's pretty much the gist of what you first wrote, and I've expressed my dislike of that approach enough.

The more push-back there is on tats and body piercings, the more those being discriminated against will push back, and perhaps eventually into the courts. As time goes by and the the old-school judges are pushed out for newer, younger, more socially aware judges, I suspect there will come a time when it will become illegal to discriminate on the basis of "body art", just as it did with men's long hair some number of years ago. I believe personal liberties are a wonderful thing (can you tell?), and while I don't force anyone to share my beliefs, neither do I like someone trying to force their personal beliefs on me and mine.

If you don't wish to hire someone with body art, that's your business. But please, keep the "morality" of body art to yourself.

I didn't think this would get some so "heated" over the topic, I do apologize if this appears to have gone this way. However I don't see why I'm apologizing sense I'm not the one attacking (personal preferences of the writters) others.

I was mostly inquiring about thougths on, if you happen to notice the edge of a Tattoo upon someone you see in a "professional" setting and your thoughts on "Professional Apperance"

Now, that being said, the Term "Professional" doesn not JUST apply to Opticians, Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses, but also in Military, Contractors, the cable guy, and even the guy that comes and cuts your lawn.

Unfortunitly Tattoos are a part of our society..... Not just now, but HAVE BEEN a part of all societies for hundrands and Thousands of years. Just trying to have a civil conversation about thouths is you happen to catch the edge of one.

Sadly YES, some people are going to judge others based souly upon outward apperance and not the inner knowledge of their job. This just goes to show a closed minded individual and not accepting that there may other reasons for an outward apperance. Some can change it, some can't.

I personally like tattoos. I think the 'Suicide Girls' are all beautiful tattooed women. I wish we could all just be individuals, and express ourselves without anyone taking offense, but we aren't there yet. As I said before, our society evolves, and occasionaly devolves. I remember when 'family values' was the politcal key word of the day, and even then as a disinterested youth I could hear the truth behind the hype, and I didn't like it.

And to Mike, I'll bet we agree on most socio-politcal issues, and I didn't intend to get you worked up. I'm about as far from the republican agenda as you can get without being a socialist. (side note, my father is convinced going to a liberal arts college turned me into a socialist)

So.... how about them Red Sox?

Try again, Tattoos Actaully come from aciant civilations and have been passed through time and culture, "Sailors" are not the first and only to have them. Many different cultures and civilations have used Tattoos to show status and meaning to show whom they are.

It's really not so much an "issue" with my job. Arms can be covered up easily one way or another. I was mostly just thinking og the fact, if the edge of it catching the glimps of someone's eye, what might they think of the "Professional" and that was the purpose of this post to ask others opinions. As I said, many of the girls Tattoos are seen on a daily basis, and not always by purpose to show them off.

As for a shirt that fits better. That is the challenge, it takes a XXXL Sleeve to fit my arms, but an XL to fit my torso.

It's like i'm wearing a MooMoo with the XXXL's lol

..And to respond to the original question of this thread, I don't have a problem with seeing ink poking through. I like knowing that people have interestnig lives outside of their jobs, and aren't just what their nametag states. It's cool to me to find out that your dentist likes cave exploring in Mexico, and in my experience, most tattoos have a pretty interesting story behind them. Especially the ones people regret. Those are my favorites. And yes, I have one that falls into that category. I actually regretted it half way through and made the artist stop. And 15 years later it is still unfinished.

So as an industry, let's work together and change the stereotype. Let's all get P3 tattoos! or maybe ABO insignias? Wait. I've got it!! THE ESSILOR LOGO!!!

could you imagine if when a customer comes in and asks what kind of lenses you sell, you just roll up your sleeve and BAM! HOYA 4 LIFE tattoo!!??

I hear ya! I have the same problem being 6'3" and 220 lbs with long gangly arms. I have found it much easier to find clothes now then in the past, maybe somebody got wise and realized there is a huge untapped market for tall guys clothes. Not that I have any stock in the company but I recommend Men's Warehouse for shirts. They always seem to have plenty of shirts with longer arm lengths. Just my 2 cents on the topic.

P.S. I have multiple tattoos, several of which are on my forearms so I am always wearing long sleeves, even in the tropical heat of this summer. None show when I'm fully dressed, though, and that's what I would expect of co-workers and peers.

OMG, I may just do the Essilor Logo just for the hell of it, mostly for when they take over the world I can already be a part of the crowd! LOL

Now I am getting a pair of "Buddy Holly" glasses on my right forearm, and some P3's wouldn't be bad either! LOL

Well, to make this a more interesting place, there is now a Group for "Tattooed And Employed"

If you care to share your love of them, we can do so there.

I dunno...we had a young lady get her lower lip pierced once, a while back, and it was not pleasant to look at with her swollen face and all, as well as her tongueing it all day long. We asked her to get rid of it, she did not comply, we let it slide, she later quit over some other issue...or maybe it had something to do with the fact that she was bankrupt because she paid over $2000 (that's right, two thousand) for dental work on her ferret.

I was hoping for awhile that the Bosox would do the opposite of last year, and have an amazing spetember and pull into the postseason.. but.. as long as somebody beats the Yankees, I'll be happy. And I'm actually starting to root for the Nats, they are one of only 2 teams in NL history never to make it to the World Series. After being moved from Canada as the failing Expos, to DC, and the mispelled jerseys, and some of the worst play I've seen in modern baseball, I find myself, as a baseball fan, rooting for them to make a run for those rings! And again, as long as somebody beats the Yankees, I'm happy.

I'm actually planning on getting a tattoo that I design of a butterfly, but the wings will be two frame fronts, something like an aviator from with a mirror coating. Think Lisa Frank meets rayban meets optilady's left hip. Most people think I'm a little weird for wanting it, but I think it'll look good, and since I can't beat this darn optical thing, I may as well join it....

And to all you boys with long arms, now you know how it feels to be a woman who isn't fat everywhere. Not everyone has the top to match a fat butt, just saying.

I have a total of 3. Getting ready to get number 4. I see nothing wrong with visible ink and I find ink often serves as a good conversation starter. Most of my patients are inked.

    Tatted chicks are hot.
    Yes They Are!

I briefly dated a girl who had several tattoos, including a rose vine that wrapped around her shoulder. Very alluring. Otherwise, she was pretty much your average nerdy neuroscientist.

I have two tattoos, myself, although they generally aren't visible. Unless I'm wearing certain t-shirts or tank tops.

I doubt that many people would be offended by a tasteful or discreet tattoo. Of course, if you're sporting a prison teardrop or that thing around Mike Tyson's eye, then you probably aren't applying for certain jobs, anyway.

Likewise, if your "ink" portrays stuff like voluptuous naked women, motorcycle gang logos, racist icons, or similar, potentially offensive imagery, you're better off keeping it hidden, if you don't have the sense to have it removed.

    Best regards,
    Darryl
