We recently opened a new mid to high end optical place this month and I decided to take a different approach by applying some untraditional lingo throughout the practice. This has been focused upon what we are calling our "OPTICAL STUDIO"

I decided not to use "Optical Department" because we do not sell tires, groceries, clothing, or sporting goods in any other area of our "Studio"

The word "Store" was dismissed because we do not have "Customers" but rather what we consider "Clients" The difference being an established relationship rather than a casual transaction with the purchaser.

I'm curious about any other names folks have used or given to their optical "place"

My stores have been names Aspen Manor Opticians, Wildwood Opticians and so on.

I have always believed that you establish a local connection with you client base, hence putting the name of you location in the store name. Then I always use the word "Opticians". Tells them who we are and what we do!

    Question

    EyeMan:
I believe you are correct. Some of our oldest and most respected shops, are either named after their owners or their location followed by Opticians. It does give folks a local connection and in a pinch it is easy to remember. In our area most folks relate those names to products and services they can't find in the malls or franchises. In marketing, inless you are gigantic, the best name probably would tell folks exactly who you are and what you are; don't leave them guessing. That is unless you are entirely something different and want to hit on folks' curiosity.

Kevin, 24 yrs ago, most of the shops were independent and the owner had their name in the business name; I started to do that, but some non-related person had their family name on a tire company, and was a block away from my proposed location; just didn't want people mistaking us ; calling up and asking how much our Michelin's were goin for? So, like Jo said, we used our location and added opticians, works for me; had a second location years ago (a failed venture), called it optical images, nice play on words. anyway optical studio sounds great too! Best wishes.

I feel location or neighborhood is a very important part of a business name.

Studies show that when people look in the phonebook for a service, they are looking for location. So, if your name pops out....

My business is Cedarville Eye Associates, Cedarville Eye for short.

When I bought my office in July, I changed the name to Beau Lunettes. It has a very boutique decor and goes well with my French name - Dupaquier. I also checked the local phone book before making my final decision. With a name early in the alphabet, I am FIRST in the yellow pages under the heading Optical Goods.
    Good Luck to you.
