Comparing NY Dog care licensure to US Optician Licensure

In NY, a dog-care based business needs to seek and obtain 3 different licenses, one for each of the following:

    1. Selling dog food
    2. Selling dog collars, leashes and accessories
    3. Washing/grooming dogs

Wow! 3 licenses just for dog ****! But in over 50% of states, one does not need a license to dispense eyewear.

    Go figure.

I'm starting to think that what eyewear needs is less about want vs. need, and more about getting John Q. to become more emotional about their eyewear.

Well barry, here in north carolina, a one man optical shop, needs 4 different licenses, 1. nc opticians license, 2. optician in charge license, 3. privilege license, 4. local business license, and sometimes a county license also

Licensing is just another form of taxation. The more licenses, the more taxes.

And always remember while you may be required to have a license and certification, your compeditor (O.D. employees, OMD employees and maybe chain employees) will not have to meet these qualifications. Kind of gives them the edge doesn't?

I agree! If we had more stringent laws, and they were enforced, we could jail folks for such heinous crimes such as:

    1. Leaving sunglasses unattended in a hot car, while the owner goes shopping!

    2. Leaving glasses on the roof of the car! (Romney)

    3. Chewing on (eating) glasses! (Obama)

    4. Keeping glasses in substandard/filthy housing. (me)

And why we're at it, why should we be buying new glasses, when there are millions of unwanted glasses out there already? Why don't you adopt a new pair??? (Even Altair frames have feelings...)

Yes! Let's tap into the emotional side of consumers, and milk this sucker for all it's worth!

Barry, you are (still) my hero!

Unbelievable. Those are simply hidden taxes being paid by the citizens of NY. Makes you understand why people ask for less government and a better tax system. Think about the government employees on the payroll who have to sit around and process all those forms associated with these hidden taxes. BS

But then Barry, why in the world would anyone want to live or work in New York? It takes five unions to plug in a new TV.

Just listen to Sinatra's New York New York. Being from there I can say there's no place like home but it is freaking expensive. My sister was paying 18K in property tax at one point in time. If you have $$ it's hard to beat NYC :)

Actually the Hurricaines are more of a problem, but believe it or not it's well worth it not to have Winter.

Not too sure about that one Chip. I traded the winters for the nicer weather but speaking first hand Ivan wasn't much fun. And not that it's impossible but people "usually" don't die during a snow storm. Personally I think the people down south are one of the regions biggest assets. On the down side culturally it's like vanilla ice cream.

Don't forget to capitalize "South." You will notice that I always capitalize "Nawth."
As I have gotten older I have come to prefer Vanilla.

It's easy to be emotional about eyewear - most people HATE them!
