    May 2012 ABO Exam

How did everyone who took this feel about it? Based on previous posts it will take anywhere from a month to three months to get the results!

Yeah, three months at BEST. Don't give your hopes up for anytime sooner.

The ABO was too easy. However it did serve as a reminder to never let it lapse again. This was my first time taking the CLRE though I liked it because it challenged me a bit. I like walking away from a test and running back to look things up. Good luck to everyone who took either exam!

I felt like some questions didn't have clear definite best answers, especially for lens options given a particular situation. There was also some terminology that wasn't discussed in review books. Apparently, the pass rate is on the lower side. It's annoying that we have to wait so long to get results.

Agreed. I had three questions about piano/church organist/computer user and none of the options were for a ftbf with intermediate on top and reading on bottom.

Hoping a few of those were part of their pilot questions. On the CLRE I had business questions I wasn't expecting and a weird HIPPA question about marketing campaigns and budgeting. :)

If it's anything like a piano, I guess the key would be to have primarily intermediate vision, so stand-alone intermediate glasses seem warranted. Other than that you felt it was all "easy." So you are confident you did really well?

4-7 weeks for results. 6-8 weeks after that to receive certificate.

Agreed! However from what I recall it took 2 months to just get the results back. I am also trying to sit for my state's practical on September 5th to become licensed. They require results for both the ABO and CLRE 45 days before the exam. I'm thinking that is going to be right about when I get my results back so it is all coming down to timing for me.

So in 5 months I will have gone from no certifications to becoming Licensed. So either I have been doing this for too long or it's too easy to become Licensed. Lol ;)

I hear you may be able to view your scores on the ABO/NCLE website before you receive the paper results...You just have to register... I recently took my exams on May 20th, it's only 3 days in and I'm already dying! But I also hear 4-6 weeks is pretty standard otherwise...But try registering!!! Maybe we'll get lucky and see sooner!

You will receive results sooner on the website, but only by a few days. Expect the longer of the time frames for waiting, though. I don't know what the ABO spends its money on, but it sure isn't prompt test scoring.

My understanding is that they throw in several 'trial-questions', the psychometricians then do the statistics on which questions stay, which questions get thrown-out... that is why it takes longer than you would think.

There is a method to the madness!

Best wishes for all of you who took it, I know that my students are also anxiously awaiting their results.

Before the test started, the proctor told us that there were 15 additional questions added to the test. She then said that those additional questions would NOT count against you if you got any them wrong, but do they count as extra points towards passing if you get them right?

My understanding is they do not count towards your score. It does not matter if you got them right or wrong.

Correct. It's so see if they should be on future exams depending on results.

Either way I am extremely excited, I've been in optics for 10 years, got out and recently returned... I missed it and I'm grateful to finally obtain my ABO/NCLE!

Oh, so if like 90% of test takers get a question wrong it may be thrown out? I've heard there is usually some sort of curve also.

Was it hard? How much did you study? What did you use to prepare?

That would be awesome if it were that quick. It took mine 6 1/2 weeks for the results, then another 10 weeks for the certificate.
(for my basic certification, that is. The advanced was much faster)

I HATED the piano/computer user questions! I really felt that so many of the questions had multiple right answers, and many of them to me felt as though there wasn't really a "best" answer. I also think the questions were rather outdated. I understand that it is critical to know the history of the technology behind the industry, but it was a little overkill for me. I've been in optics for about 7 years now, which isn't a lot, but I still thought I would feel more more confident coming out of it than I do. :/
