milling bit - Lens groove in frame

    Hello,

I was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction. I am looking for a milling bit to cut the the groove to hold the lens in the front frame. I have looked at Dremel and Proxxon bits, but they all seem to narrow and to deep.

Thank you for your time and support.

    Kind regards,

    Mark Webber

Try Harbor Freight. They carry a lot of milling machine bits. You are going to need a 60 degree "V" cutter. There are plenty of suppliers for those.

    Sources for bits:
Wood working supplies (more on line than in local stores).
Machine tool supplies (more on line than local outlets).
    Hobby craft suppliers
    Dental suppliers infinite supply available.
    Micro-Mark tools (google them)

P.S. I think you sent me a note intended for Jerry Huang. One or two of the bits shown look most promising, if you find thier source please share.

Ultimately you will need to modify your tool to have a stop that retains your cutting bit from the front of frame to the deepest point of your cutting bit. Whenever possible try to get tools from sources that are not optical or dental specific as tool will undoubtedly be available from machine tool or other supply a lot less expensively.

I learned a long time ago that one had to adjust the bevel of the lens to the shape of the frame and it groove and not the frame to the bevel of the lens. Messing around with the grrove creates more problems with fining and poiishing afte you enlarged or deepend the groove. You are into buying a new frame for customer when it looks ugly.

    Hi,

Can anyone recommend an actual product for cutting a groove into a rim? I simply can't find a tool to cut a V. I have tried disc cutters and router bits but just can't find a small V shaped cutter.
