    Frame Breakage

We seem to be having a repeating problem with zyl frames breaking after the lenses are inserted into the frame. After the lens is edged and mounted there are no signs of cracks in the frame, but after they are final inspected the break. We either clean the lenses with lens cleaner or alcohol. Any suggestions on what could be causing the problem?

Have any of your processes changed? Different heater? Change an edger wheel and now have a C Size that's too large? New employee in insertion?

Everything is the same. My thought is that using the alcohol on a zyl frame is causing it to dry out and break.

I had a problem like that when I used an all-off type spray to get progressive markings off that were not removed prior to inserting. I took the lazy way, broke a couple frames, non -acetone my a##!

alcohol isn't generally good for zyl (plastic frames) bud. And some newbies say no-heat now-a-days, but heat is needed to make it pliable. So hope you're using heat on the frame.

Are you sure they are actually zyl? We sometimes use that as a "catch-all" term for all plastic frames, but most are not really zyl. Both polyamide (or any nylon-based material) and propionate frames can crack if exposed to alcohol. If it gets into the eyewire it will eat into any stress points on the frame. I would suggest that the lenses be thoroughly dried before insertion so that NO cleaning products get into the eyewire. Good luck!

Are they breaking at the lensometer, when someone has an axis plier on them, to shift lens axis?

In our lab, all frames are inspected using a high powered lens( a lenticular base 16 lens would do) to check for cracks you can't see with the naked eye, apart form other imperfections. SHould fine cracks be seen, then we inform our client about the situation. Should our client allow us to proceed with the job despite a possible breakage during insertion, then it is agreed that we wouldn't be answerable for any breakages that could happen. Just thought of sharing. Have a great weekend to everyone.

Marchon put out some Coach frames a couple years ago that were lovely to work with UNLESS you put poly lenses in them AND cleaned them with alcohol. Within 10 seconds of the poly-alcohol combination, the frames would snap.

No alcohol with plastic frames. Clean the lenses with alcohol, then insert them, then clean the glasses with lens cleaner.
