The National Eye Institute has reported that nearly 9 million people in the United States who are 40 years old or older are dealing with macular degenerative disease and 20 million from cataracts. Maintaining eye health is especially important as we age in order to retain our independence and we must do all we can to keep them healthy and strong.
According to the institute's report, 25% of our daily nutritional intake is necessary for eyes to work properly. Vitamin A is typically ingested as beta-carotene and according to “EyeCareSource,” 15 mg is needed daily to prevent night blindness, reduce cataracts and macular degenerative disease, as well as proper retina functioning. Lutein is another essential vitamin in eye health and 6mg is the recommended daily dose. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition did a study and found that when 500 mg of Vitamin C is taken daily, the onset of cataract formation was reduced. Although, zinc is a mineral, the National Institute of Health's Office of Dietary supplements found that when 80 mg were taken in conjunction with Vitamins A, and C, it was found to be beneficial to overall eye health.
