    Names you just don't................

Names you just don't see any more!

I have been doing some work on my family tree. It occurred to me that there are many names that you don't see parents using to torture their kids with anymore. I thought that it might be neat to list a few has been names!

    Ladies
    Ida
    Wilhelmina
    Gertrude
    Beatrice
    Dorkus
    Alice
    Charlotte
    Evelyn
    Pearl
    Clarabelle
    Vera
    Florence
    Lucille

    Gentleman
    Archibald
    Sherman
    Conrad
    Galen
    Harvey
    Bennett
    Bert/Burt
    Winifred
    Wilbert
    Edwin
    Merlin
    Gaylord
    Wallace

Seeing some of these names makes me damn happy that I only had one child's life to ruin with a lousy name!

    Think of any other "winners"?

No wonder no one likes Dorkus; but how about Dorcas, the kindest woman in the Bible?

It seems that for all of history, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah have been the top 3 girls' names--it's just not so anymore. They're not even on the top 10 list. Now it's all Twilight names. Meh.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Actually Fezz I have patients by all of the women's names except Clairabelle and Dorcus. But then I thought Winifred was a woman's name.

No knocking twilight. We have at least one Dorkas. There are about a billion Bella's in my daughters school. My dogs name is Bella too. I'm guilty.

Y'all need to listen to the credits on NPR's Car Talk.
Among the cast, their driver is Pikup Andropov, their law firm is Dewey, Cheetem and Howe and their research on working mothers is conducted by Erasmus B. Draggin.

    Both true:

I grew up in a farm house that was built in 1836. My family was the third owner. The previous owner's name was Mabel Webster, and she married the boy next door. His name was Joseph Srp. So, she became Mabel Srp. (Incidentally, they were the largest maple syrup producers in the county, and my parents still have more than 3200 sap producing trees.)

One of my employee's grandmothers is named Fannie Butt.

    Eunice.

On the flip side Fezz, a lot of people my age are giving their children old-fashioned names. I actually know quite a few young kids with some of the names off your list.

    Mine is Liisi.(like LEESEE)
Nope, not short for anything. It'a a family name from my Dad's side (it's Finnish). Not too many Liisi's even in Finland.
Stephen King wrote a book called Lisey's Story(spelled it wrong).
I always joke that with all those I's I'm in the right business.
If I am at work and need to order things, etc. my name is "Lisa".
I'm curious what you named YOUR child......

    Andrew's Rule for Naming Babies:

A person's name must work in three different contexts. If it does not work in all three contexts, it is considered to be a bad name.

    1. It must work as a baby's name.
    2. It must work as an elderly person's name.
    3. It must work when cried out during sex.
I'm Andrew Hamm and I approve this message.

No no no. Fezzmerelda. That's what I'm naming my baby. You know, the fake one my patients keep asking me about?

As to what determined my own children's names, I had my own criteria (and none were whether they sounded good while in the throws of passion-thats just nasty):

    1. They had to be old fashioned. No names that were the same as a car, city, or simply picked out of the alphabet at random.
    2. They had to already by a nickname. No Archibauld to Archie. My actually name is Jennifer. Enough said.
    3. They had to end in the sound "E". To go with Annie.

and the winners were.....Abby and Katie. Goes well with Annie and Jake-y (my poor husband).

The best name of all time goes to Dick Butkus. I couldn't work that name in enough conversations when I was a bratty kid.

    The name Olga

how on earth do you look at a beautiful little baby girl and christen her Olga......somehow my great grandparents did that to their only daughter, that after six sons, all with pretty solid names you can still use today.
It was back in the Rhienland area of Germany in the 1890's, but from what I see in the family tree, that one was pulled out of thin air. There were Elizabeth's, Adelheid's(Heidi), Katerina's, Maria's and Johanna's as grandmothers and aunts but no Olga's anywhere in the lineage.
