    Post yellow halo

I have a patient who is experiencing a yellow halo around objects with her new glasses. her rx is OD-0.25 +1.00 x178 OS -0.25 +0.75 x 180 with a 225 add. she is in a varilux physio enhanced. She decided to go with a drilled rimless frame so my choices in lens material are kind of limited. we started with poly and moved her to trivex. with and with out anti-relfective coating. with and with out polished edges. i have also matched the base curve of her old lenses that she apparently didnt have this problem with. I've tried different face form and panto. she is on her fourth pair of lenses and still has the same problem. any thoughts?

Maybe she has started a catarct which might produce the halo effect. Have it checked.

You left the cataracts question unanswered. Does the vision return to normal when the eyeglasses are removed, with the old eyeglasses, or with a trial frame? Is the optic nerve healthy?

sorry i dont see a cataracts question. i see where cataracts were suggested. and i dont know about the optic nerve. if you read my second post it says im trying to see what i missed on the glasses, not what the optometrist missed on the exam.

I think Robert (who is second to none in helping with this question) is trying to help by a process of elimination which will involve both the internal and external functions of the eye and her eyeglasses.

Be willing to bet the vertical (or possibly) horizontal center is off. And don't you neva believe you can't do a rimless in CR-39. Millions have been done in CR-39 (or even glass for that matter).

Chromatic Abberation. put in CR-39 drill the holes on size then carefully ream the drill hole slightly large if using a silhouette type mounting. (you do have a lens broach set I hope)

If a conventional drill mount (my fav.) make sure to use T-Hat washers on both sides of the lens and ream lens on size. Personally I ream all drill mount to size.

@ chip -i checked the glasses and everything came out as it was supposed to. and i do believe drilled rimless can be done in cr-39 but it is company policy that we dont do it in glass or cr-39

@ robert- after reading my post again, i am sorry, i totally came off as a prick. she did not have this problem with her old glasses. and she claims that with every change i make the problem gets better. but it's almost like she is trying to see it now.. if that makes sense

What was the material of the old lenses? Kevin suggested chromatic aberration and it may well be that. Poly is notorious for it, and trivex is better, but still nowhere as good as glass and cr-39.
Another longshot, but some labs use a tintable hardcoat on everything and they sometimes have a slight yellowish hue.

Put on the glasses in question, and look at a fluorescent light. If its chromatic abb, you'll see it, independant of her Rx or Rx blur on you.

@ barry- the first pair i gave her were poly and she had this effect no matter what she was looking at. now that she is in trivex she says she doesnt see it inside the office (which is under florescent lighting) anymore. only at a distance. in that case could it still be chromatic abb?

But the symptoms diminish as the lens material becomes less dispersive. Maybe that's part of it though, a sensitivity to chroma that is aggravated by changes in the lens.

Even without cataracts, I've experienced this with one or two clients, and have read about it in Jim Sheedy's old newsletter (no answers). I believe it's due to some unexplained, hypersensitive interaction between our eyes' own internal chroma, and chroma from the eyeglass lenses. Fortunately, it appears to be a rare condition!

If true, the solution requires decreasing the chromatic aberration of the eyeglass lenses. I would start by making sure that there is no prism thinning, use cr39 or crown glass as needed, and as a last resort use a PAL design with little or no drop between the fitting point and the OC, and/or segmented multifocals.

Prism thinning usually causes this sensation with a low rx like this. Reorder with no prism thinning (No BD prism).

Did she have this with her old glasses? And were they a full frame as opposed to a drill mount? I've had patients with similar complaints going from a full frame to a fully exposed edge rimless mount.

Yeah, that was covered (see my post at the end of this thread), although it's a good idea for everyone to keep an eye on the degree of prism thinning, if any, especially for single lens changes.

Eyeoneder, are you still here? How did this play out?
