I remember an article years ago in Soldier of Fortune magazine from a retired Colonel who made a lot of sense when he put forth the reason Russia got into Afganistan in the 70's was their desire for a warm water port. When the American embassy was overrun and hostages taken this to them was an act of war and they felt surely America would invade and in the fog of war they could punch down the Pakistan/Afganistan border to create a sliver of land to the Persian gulf where they could build a port. They had installed a corrupt puppet who refused to let them use the newly built road they built from one of the "stan's". The road they so graciously created for their development allowed the rapid invasion, the dictator was replaced in the usual final fashion (hanged as I recall) and a new one was installed.
So began the Soviets Vietnam. They of course left after the West armed the Taliban and so it goes on and on. And we wonder why tribal leaders in the region really just want to be left alone.

(The following is a quote. I won't bother to attribute it in this age of google.)
“Naturally the common people don't want war. Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood.
But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”
Chris:
Surely you don't think our great pease and muslim loving president and senate would do anything as dispicable as this. Specially not before the next two elections.
Lincon never should have said: "Appearently the people are afraid to change horses in mid-stream." Appearently many have felt having an on-going war is a road to re-election for unpopular presidents.

Let's be careful not to suggest any kind of national or international vendetta against Muslims.
I give you Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli, accepted by the U.S. Congress in 1796:
Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary
"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

Riesle:
I guess whomever wrote that never read the exploits of Gen. John J. Pershing in the Phillapines. Where "The Pershing Cure" was effective for 50 years.

Wow, haven't heard about any of that on the news. Thanks for the post.
