    Gorilla Glass

An engineer was in the office yesterday and asked if gorilla glass can be used for eyeglasses. I know it is made by Corning, it is used for smartphones and other PDA devices, but I couldn't find any answers in google search pertaining to eyeglasses. Besides the fact that it's glass, and who wants to wear glass anymore, out of curiosity, does anyone have any input on the use of gorilla glass for optical lenses? (Anyone out there from Corning want to weigh in on the subject?)

If you take the initiative and go to Cornings web site you will find the answer to your query.

Gorilla glass is a thin film polymer and would therefore be unsuited to ophthalmic lenses. I also suspect that it would not be more durable than existing lenses.

Suspect there will be something named that (like teflon) with no resemblence to the origional product soon. Actual application of the real thing to spectacles, maybe 2025. After all it took about 40 years to plastic to replace glass as the most used for spectacles product.

Chris, thanks for the link. I wondered if this had been discussed before. I did look at the corning website, but there was no mention of any spin off for optical purposes. Personally, I don't believe it's a viable product for ophthalmic purposes.
