WAY TO GO FEDS !! The sad thing, though, is China's lack of response to the entity that shipped these. It's not like they can't track it. The article did not say who imported these either.

Don,t think they will auction them off, they can not be used in the USA neither somewhere else. And do not forget that chinese companies take the money out front so they were paid and the importer is out of the money and the glasses.

Usually what they do with them is run them over with a steamroller.

In Hong Kong and China there is a company called Crocodile that was incorporated in 1952. The logo is slightly different from LaCoste. Aside from different looking crocs the LaCoste croc faces to the right and the Crocodile logo faces to the left.

    2003 CNN article: http://edition.cnn.com/2003/BUSINESS...rocodile.logo/

Actually what happened in the 1950s is that they flooded the market with cheap binoculars then sold and retailed by optical shops in EuropThey got sold for ten percent of the value of Zeiss / Leitz or the Swiss Kern brands in discount food stores.

The quality was so bad because they glued the prisms into the casings and when you happen to knock the binoculars against something the prisms would fall out of their settings, and could never be re-glued and properly aligned. The European made expensive binoculars had prisms mounted on metal brackets which were adjustable, they could be fixed and the from a blow resulting double images could be eliminated.

So the Janpanese lost huge sales as the European manufacturers were fighting back. At that time they named a town Jena (the optical Capital of Germany of the old times) MADE IN JENA.............and that is how it started.

Doc........................you have always been sharp. The Logo is the same but going to the left. However they must have had paper work (invoices) saying that the glasses were a LaCoste brand so they could be sold as a cheap LaCoste product.

Without knowing all the details we can only speculate. The CNN article specified about the logo and not about documentation. I do not know if Crocodile branded product can be sold outside of Hong Kong and China without creating new legal disputes with LaCoste.

Estimated unit cost of $1.10 each, 30K will certainly leave a bit of a ripple in one's profit margin.

That makes sense............Canadian customs sent me a postcard about 16 years ago (postmarked in Ottawa the Capital. whyle we have customs also in Montreal where I live)) that they had seized two parcels that came in by post from Germany.

One contained a kilo of Swiss air dried beef (a $ 100 value in Switzerland), a delicacy and very expensive, and the other a rare bottle of "Poire Williams" which costs around $ 80.00 in Quebec.
They claimed that it was criminal to receive such gifts by mail and they had it destroyed.

I am sure it ended up at some high officials kitchen in Ottawa who enjoyed the expensive goodies.

In a former life, I was an Air Force customs agent, stationed in Osan, Korea. We seized tons (literally) of Jordache, and Sergio Valente jeans, Nike shoes, and Cabbage Patch dolls. The dolls were easy to catch because they were stuffed with scrap rags that smelled like kerosene. The Izod shirts had logos in which the croc's mouth was open much wider than it should have been, and the Polo shirts sported the horse and polo player, but the horse only had 3 legs (very difficult to notice). Member's Only jackets were probably the number one item that service members tried to smuggle out (by the truckload!)
    "
When we seized these, because we were on Korean soil, we gave them to the South Korean gov't, which donated most of the clothing to orphanages. Often, they would just tell us to donate them ourselves to some of the local orphanages located just off base. That was a blast, and it would be like Christmas morning in the middle of May! It was fun to see these kids walking around with all these "designers". They were the sharpest dressed kids in town!

actually there was another seizue nearly a year ago..........................

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Customs has seized millions of dollars worth of fake sunglasses and reading glasses arriving from China.
US Customs and Border Protection, also known as the CBP, seized nearly 10,000 pairs of counterfeit Givenchy sunglasses and 3,600 Giorgio Armani reading glasses at the Port of Los Angeles Feb. 2. 2011

The combined value of the seized shipment is nearly $2.6 million. Officials say aside from affecting legitimate manufactures and the US economy, counterfeit glasses could be a danger to customers since they can shatter, cause eye injury, and may fail to provide UV protection.

Yes,it is amazing how much safer a pair of glasses can be when the logo says "Ray Ban" instead of "Ray Bon" It's almost magical!

Redhot Jumper On line opticals could sell fake brands..........................

Question that just came up in my brain........................

The on-line sellers advertising and selling brand name glasses which then are stocked and made up in a lab in China, or Thailand or somewhere else in the far east, and then shipped to consumer.

How many of them are selling fake brands, who checks them they come back from these labs and are delivered by the postal service and never checked by customs as they come in small parcels? The consumer gets them direct from lab by MES or from the seller.
