I can't imagine doing anything else.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

    * Use the bathroom 1st thing in the morning?

    * Put our right shoe on first?

    * Use Silk instead of milk?

    * Trim our uni-brow?

    * Laugh when someone slips on the ice?

Because honestly, who else wakes up in the morning excited about frames or new PAL designs?

As I do not really know if above is true, at least in my case. I was born into it and when I was 16 my father wanted me to come for an evening walk with him and the dog.

Then he started to tell me that I had make up mind what I was going to do later in life. Of course a natural way would be to become an optician and he would provide all the needed education. Then he said "of course you could also become a Hotelier and go the the world famous hotel school in Lausanne, the travel and work in hotels in other countries for a few years. When that part was over I would come back to Switzerland and he would buy me a small hotel in the Swiss mountains.

I hated the mountains, as kids father always woke up my sister and me every Sunday morning at 4am during the summer month and he had to walk up some mountain to the top that took about 2-3 hours of alps filled with cows and the the last part was steep rocks. On top there is usually a restaurant or holte were we had breakfast and then walked back down to be home for lunch. Half the Sunday was gone.

Now guess what profession I chose ---------> optician. Then came optical school and many more. So I never even had a chance to work at anything else, but I believe that I made a good living along the time.

So there was no real choice, that is what I do best.............because I do not know anything else.

So that is what I do best.

Chris, I took the op's question to be why do we stay in this, not how we got into it. Early on, I almost left to become a police officer, but decided against it. I had a friend leave to go back to school and become a teacher, and he came back also.(great cl fitter) I have a frame rep now that has a pharmacy license, yet continues to slepp frames. We continue to do what we do, because we do what we do best.

As Melvile said: "Our lot in life is killin whales."

Well, ours is making eyeglasses. It like killin whales was a once honorable profession.

There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

Why do we do what we do?

Osmosis. A job came along when I needed one, had just got out of the service and was painting houses, which I detested. Someone I bowled with, his wife worked for an optical company, and she heard of a job openeing up. I had no idea what the job entailed, but I did know I was going to give it my best shot, so I wouldn't dissappoint myself and family. The service gave me the discipline that was needed, but primarily osmosis, like I mentioned first. A job was there I needed it, and did it to the best of my ability and worked hard everyday. 37 years and never fired or laid off, I lucked out, in my opinion. Some people hate their jobs as opticians and it shows. They should find another calling.

I "temporarily" dropped out from pre-med and loved the interaction with people and the positive reaction I received from being busy .

I started as a lab rat when I was eighteen and I needed a job through college. I eventually dropped out of college to follow my optical career but I ended up in a stagnant position that made me feel burnt out and underappreciated so I quit the business and moved to North Carolina.

When I met my fiance he encouraged me to get back into Optical and pursue my education. I fully believe that the path that took me to the place I am now was correct- it helped me gain the perspective I needed that can only come from stepping away and assessing from afar. I love my job, I love my OD's, my coworkers, and my patients. I love the math, the science, the fashion, and the problem-solving. I have confidence (most days at least) in what I do. I am excited about furthering my education and about new technology on the horizon. I've got a good gig. :)

I think most of us do this because it takes a certain amount of passion.

Actually, I love my job. I left, came back and now would love to continue to learn everything I can about optics.
