What does an optician make in ontario?
What does an optician make in ontario?
Not enough.

For some reason, the Ottawa, Ontario area seems to pay among the highest wages... as high as $25-$30/hr right out of school, including BC’s 6-month opticianry program, and gaining Ontario licensure. Golden Horseshoe area seems to pay less, in the $18-$25/hr, for straight out of school and with licensure. Of course, I stand to be corrected. Ontarioans?
As a business owner and 30 year optician, I find this somewhat of a concern. Some Opticians especially those that have been licensed for less than 5 years can come to a business and sell. Others with much more experience can not sell. At 25.00/hr or 200.00 per day I expect sales! The differences between Opticians that can sell and those that can't can cost me my business! I have worked every corner of this industry and have hired and fired more than 50 opticians. The sales abilities vary wildly. If you want a higher salary, be good and sure that you are worth it to your employer. A technical optician, which may well be good at adjusting and fitting is valuable, but one that can sell and adjust and troubleshoot is worth his/her weight in GOLD!
Wages anywhere are what the worker wants vs. what the employer is willing to pay. Our side of the ledger has no entitlements.

Mike:
The retail side. Not the government subisidy side. As far as I know Optician wages are not set by any regulartory body, except possibly minimum wage. After that, it's between how much you can sqeeze out of the employer. If the guy across the street makes more or less than you, it's still between you and the employer as to what you get.
Chip
ahh so you are an employee who wants as much as he can take = taker.
absolutely no employee thinks they make too much....or may I rephrase that... earns more than they should, for the work that they do.
Wages across canada are consistant...my father has a dispensary in Brantford.
Thank you. The reason I am asking is because I am new to the province and I want to know what a standard rate is. Any information you can supply would help me a great deal! Thank you very much.
Dad says 18.00/hr plus commision. Commisions range from 100-500.00 per month
Isn't it illegal or at the least immoral to work on commission, considering the nature of the work is to "dispense" a product that is medically necessary to your customer? Shouldn't your customers recommendations be based solely on their needs, and free from the influence of a commission?
Manitoba:
Morals and ethics went out of the optical business around 1965. Commissions based on Upsell. Upsell translation: Talk them into the most expensive thing you got whether they need it or not.

I strongly believe you can do both, up sell and serve the customer. We can assess the customer's needs base upon Rx, occupation, life style, interests, etc. With this information we can recommend the best choice in terms of frame selection, lens design and coatings. Unfortunately too many of us assume what the client can or can not afford. We should simply explain the options and let the client decide. This way we serve the client, our employer and our profession. Sounds like a win win situation to me. If your commission is based on % of sales or premium lenses/ coatings I see no conflict. However if your just selling the flavor of the month which is not always in the client's best interest then there is a conflict.
