    Optronics 4T Tracer Troubles

Can anyone advise what to do with a 4 yr old Optronics 4T Tracer whose number pad and stylus both stick?
If you type in tray 123, you might get 122223333 even if you only type 123. The tracings also don't make it all the way around the lens because the stylus doesn't make a smooth sweep around. Do I send it out for repair and cleaning?
    What's the problem? HELP!!

Take the cover off and use a toothbrush to clean debris from the gears inside. That will help the one problem. The keypad is a different animal. If it comes apart like the one on the 6E edger, take it apart and use a pencil eraser on the squiggly gold contacts underneath the rubber keypad to clean them up good.

You could always replace the keypad, if it is part of the main circut board you could also purchase a new keypad and solder the leads from the new keypad to the old keypad. If you just have a button that is sticking, sometimes when you open up the equipment you will find buttons that are just pieces of spring steel in a dome formation, constant pressing of the button fatigues the top of the dome and you'll often find a crack on that dome which causes the sticking. Replace this part and often times the problem is fixed. Another kind of button is one that uses a rubber pad on the bottom of the button, this black rubber pad is often either coated with carbon or has carbon mixed throughout the rubber. If the carbon is mixed throughout the rubber then all you have to do is get a fine grain sand paper and sand off a bit of the surface from the rubber this will restore conductiviity. If it is coated then you can take apart a cheap plastic calculator and superglue the rubber pad from one of those buttons onto your defective button.

Here is a link to a similar dome button that could be used as a replacement if this is the type of button used in that tracer. If you have the schematics post them here and I can definately help you fix and aquire the parts for the repair:
