    Part time opportunities in Florida?

I am nearing the end of the line, and I am seriously considering retiring. I have been doing this since 1975, and at 56, I am slowing down. I was just wondering what the market is like in Florida for un-licensed part time opticians. I am licensed in NY and NC, but have zero ambition to get licensed in Florida if it means taking any kind of test, I'm too old for that. I am looking for private practices preferrably. Any help appreciated!!

Any hope for at least a decent per hour pay for what I bring to the table??

Hey, come to Texas! Pretty much the same weather and tax rate. (no state taxes) I got a shed out back you can bunk in while looking for employment!

Dear sir, what exactly are you "bringing to the table"?

On the other hand...my husband is planning a fishing trip out of Sugar Loaf Key, and could probably use somebody to bait hooks, run for ice, and keep the beer well filled. Any interest? Of course, it's not a Texas mansion, but there's a spot next to the anchor, under the tarp for you to curl up at night.

Actually tmorse, Ms. Darby's offer has merit. obx is a good friend of mine. Few people here know that he was a fish monger on Long Island prior to becoming an optician. He could monger fish with the best of them! Baiting a hook? No problem. Keeping a beer well full could prove problematic though. His beer drinking is legendary, even Fezz would be hard pressed to keep up with him!

If you mean Darby I believe she is a shade older than the outer banks guy.

    Or do you mean Obx?

The only thing optically going on here on the east coast of Florida (between Jacksonville and Daytona), is me burning lizards with old post cataract lenses!

The only thing here that is more dead than optical, is most of the retirees!

So you live at the beach and you want to retire to the beach? Sounds like the long way home.

Yes indeed , we like to cruise, and most of them leave from Florida, so we want to cut out the airfare. Travel is on the mind, and the wife lost her job today, so all is good. Trying very seriously to find a way to make this work.

You can also become a food bagger at the cash at Publix Supermarkets that are all over Florida, get a salary and medical insurance and meet tons of people. Have seen many of them in the Obituaries over the years having been multi millionaires.

Actually Chris's idea is one I thought about, as a friend of mine did that also.

I feel like I should apologize. I didn't mean to be flippant with my reply to your search. Well, actually, I did meant to be flippant, but I apologize for assuming I knew your situation, and for taking it lightly. Having a spouse lose their job is no laughing matter.

And yes, I am slightly older than you are, and that is certainly no laughing matter either. I will keep ears and eyes open, and try to keep my mouth shut.

Your initial response was fine with me, I actually saw the humor in it, no apology needed.

As opticians go, I have been fortunate. I moved to the beach at 45, and now 11 years later, The fact that I can consider quitting all together is rather amazing, as most of us opticians work until we die, ask Chip. Not sure how long the savings will provide for us, but we live pretty simple lives, so I can only guess.

I think your spot would be a plum opportunity for a beach lover. Who's gonna get it?

Sorry Bro, I have 5 or 6 ex-employees that have offered to take a wage cut to work with me unfortunatly again but none of them surface. Ideally, I need someone who can surface, edge, pre-test, sell and dispense. Basically someone who can pick up where I leave and continue the flow.

I'm willing settle for a surfacing lab-tech that wont scare the patients.

I can't surface, but am bright enough to learn again, as it has been over 25 years since I have done it. All the rest I can do, and I only scare off the evil ones as far as I know.

I plan on flying down in Jan. to check out housing. We are headed for the Caribbean for a few weeks at Thanksgiving time, then my wife is headed north for a visit, voila, end of the year. Any and all leads are appreciated.

Mark, this could be your answer. I've thought about it and spoken with Mike. When I decide to retire, this is what I'm going to do, if it's still available.
