    Help with sunglass progressives

    Hi, fellow boarders!

I've run into a problem I don't know how to go about fixing. Maybe some of the brains here can help me!

    pt script:
    OD: +1.50 -1.25 x95
    OS: +1.25 -0.75 x93
    add +2.00

Lens: plastic Genesis, plzd brown in a Jessica McClintock frame (54 eye, 43 b) fit at 20mm. Measurements are accurate, script is right on.

Pt. received new script in sunglasses and is experiencing bowing when gazing downward, ground looks further away than actually is. Very experienced prog wearer, script didn't change much (+.25 in distance, no change in add) from last pair. Same base curve and material, very similar style of suns to old pair. The only thing that is different is the amount of panto. New pair has a little more tilt than old. Tried removing some of the panto on new pair but design of frame is limiting how much I can do it. I don't think that is really the main issue though, but I am up for any hints or suggestions.

Never run into this before so any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Add more panto, have had the same experience personally, (I seldom adjust my own glasses when I get them from the lab) adding a lot more panto straightens dem coives outten dem brick sidewalks.

And if a bit more panto does not take care of the issue..........restyle. Paying attention to similar panto as what the pt has been wearing.

I find panto to be the most important adjustment to progressive wearers, other than correct seg and pd measurements. I too struggle with all the new cool frames that make panto an impossible adjustment, and have days i wish i could just put every patient into a safilo elasta as I find they are the easiest to adjust and hold their shape the best. However, I do know that many on here have interesting ways to adjust any frame to create any fit, so maybe the question should be, how can you increase the panto on this specific frame?

    The OP wants less panto.

Check if there are differences in prism thinning.

Check if the fitting cross is too low.

How to adjust panto? Do not be afraid to take a file to the bottom front edge of the temple and file it down. It can be done to look nice and neat and keep the same angle on both temples. That way you can increase the panto of most any frame. If you just grab it and start bending you will put undue stress on the barrel of the hinge.

I second that. Check the amount of prism, it should be about 1.20 (60% of the add.)
You could also try bending the final portion of each temple upwards. It won´t look nice for sure but you will get less panto for your troubleshooting. If it doesn´t work you can always bend them back to their original position.

I did not know the amount of prism thinning was proportional to the add power. Could ya please clarify? Thanks

    .6 X the add power (or 2/3rds) base down OU. i.e +2.50 add you would use 1.5 base down OU. (2.50 X .6 = 1.5)

OR you could refit the patient with a lens design that can be customized for wrap and panto.
