Adapting to glasses after only wearing contacts for years.

I have a high minus patient who has exclusively worn contacts for the past ten years or more. He is trying to get back in the habit of wearing glasses
but cannot adapt to the distortion in periphery. He's in a Shamir Autograph II SV which we have had success with in the same situation. Does anyone have any suggestions on this matter?

Take away his contacts for a week. Did you use a high-ABBE material for his lenses instead of 1.67 or 1.74?

Reduce the vertex as much as possible, give him the standard lecture about moving the chin and not the eyes; and, as Dragon says, make him sign the Blood Oath to wear only glasses for a week (two would be better). It will work if he wants it to.

Throw in a little more face form as well if you already don't have them wrapped around their head. Move that peripheral distortion back out of sight.

Every high myope has this problem. Just tell him it's gonna be that way, especially for the first 1/2 hr. or so after removing the contacts. That's why God invented contacts was so he could have peripheral vision and larger images.

For a well fitted, well Rx's myope glasses are only for finding the contacts in the morning and the bathroom at night.

Yep, that's the only way we can minimize barrel distortion. This is a grin and bear it situation until the brain adapts, and generally does so regardless if the eyeglasses are worn full or part-time.

Too much and there can be induced diplopia. I always liked mine to be coplanar when I was a high minus. What is the general power of this high minus?

So many people automatically go to the highest index material and, in high powers like this, saddle the customer with problematic lenses. The difference in thickness between 1.70 and 1.74 is very minimal, but the improvement of vision is remarkable. Next time, do your customer a favor, use 1.70 and get it digitized.
