  • Barcode scanner...

...and the santinelli me1200. I know that I 'should' use their 'specialized' barcode scanner. However, I happen to have some old metrologic (still made and sold) programmable barcode scanners.

I'm wondering if there is anyone here that might know what the settings are (or know where to get them) for the scanner. Its still an rs232 interface, and that's how the edger interfaces. The scanner powers up and acknowledges connection. Tho when I scan, nothing happens.

I know this could be posted in the optical area, but what I'm looking for is someone with more knowledge of serial ports than me.

I have all the programming documentation for the scanner, just not what the machine uses, and (of course) santinelli 'cant help me'.

    Thanks in advance.

Could anyone please give me the contact details of Mr. Joseph (Nidek).

I have ever used a barcode scanner which supports supports high speed, accurate scanning and recognizing for nearly 30 different linear and 2D barcode symbologies and sub-types (like QR Code, Code 39 and Patch Code).

Which bar code scanner did you use? I needn't scan all bar codes, only common bar codes, such as code 128, pdf 417.

I know this is very old but did you get any luck finding the programming for Nidek (Santinelli) edger barcode scanners?

Cant find the exact barcode reader but ordered another on
will hope for the best. Still better then paying Santinelli $400 for it

Connectivity is the first issue. If you can physically connect the barcode reader, that's the first hurdle. Barcode readers, themselves, are little computers (micro controllers, in the IT parlance). The way they behave is through programming. Now, that's not as difficult as it sounds.

Programming a barcode scanner typically means nothing more difficult than scanning barcodes. For example, to enable certain barcodes for your scanner, you might have to scan a "mode" barcode ("put me in programming mode"), then the barcode for the symbology you want to enable, then the "mode" barcode or an "end" barcode to end programming. Then your scanner will understand the newly enabled symbology.

Features like whether or not a "carriage return" (Enter key) is sent after a scan are also enabled this way, along with beep pitch, volume, transmission speed (very important to know if you are using a serial barcode scanner), etc.

If it works right out of the box, great! If not, it just may need a few programming nudges to get it to communicate in a way the host equipment (edger, tracer) understand.
