The Retail Optical Manager reports to the District Manager. Provides responsible management in directing all facets of retail store operations, including but not limited to; the daily operation of a retail area including personnel management, budgetary controls, inventory controls, and any other requirements which may impact store operations while maintaining the highest level of customer service.

  • Interface with all Doctors of Optometry and maintain appropriate professional relations.
  • Create a retail environment that is fun, educational, professional, and provides consistent standard of customer care.
  • Assist in recruiting efforts by interviewing, hiring, and developing a team of qualified and dedicated associates.
  • Owning and operating your training program to assist you in the development of your team.
Retail Optical Manager:

Directs and coordinates activities involved in operating a retail chain store by performing essential duties personally or through subordinate associates. Is accountable for the direction of the selling activity of the store’s sales force. Strives to achieve assigned store sales and profitability goals through the effective management of store associates. Works closely with the Optometrist and host Store Manager to ensure a productive business partnership prevails.

Responsibilities:

· SALES: Directs the flow of information for sales activities and analyzes/evaluates data to maximize sales volume, profitability and store productivity to ensure store sales and profitability are met. Develops and maintains a working business partnership with the store’s Optometrist. Determines/obtains host store and local area customer demographics to identify local market opportunities and competitive environment, identifies patient sourcing options and opportunities. Is aware of and reports competitive activity.
  • PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Reviews sales mix, host store results, and trends. Highlights increases and changes over the prior year. Establishes/allocates individual sales goals. Ensures payroll and other controllable expenses are continually monitored to stay within budgeted guidelines.
  • CUSTOMER SERVICE: Develops, continually cultivates and maintains a high level of customer service and customer satisfaction in designated store. Effectively handles and resolves all customer complaint issues. Maintains a clean and customer-friendly environment within the store. Answers the telephone and greets customers according to NVI guidelines.
  • COMMUNICATIONS: Maintains ongoing communication with store associates and District Manager concerning ideas, plans, information, and issues affecting the company/store/business; maintains coordination with integral company functions. Identifies business opportunities and pinpoints problem areas. Ensures company memos, policies, regulations, etc. are communicated to and understood by staff associates through regularly scheduled mandatory store meetings. Reviews all communications from the RSC with the Assistant Manager and Lead Associate. Reviews store performance with all associates.
  • PEOPLE MANAGEMENT: Recruits, interviews, leads, hires, trains, develops, increases/maintains high morale, and disciplines store associates to ensure adequate staffing and proper service is provided. Hires and develops/retains promotable associates. Completes new hire paperwork. Determines/plans store staffing development requirements by outlining specific performance improvement areas, certification requirements, and training/learning resources. Schedules individual training plans with corresponding resources required.
  • MARKETING: Coordinates store sales/promotional activities; ensures implementation. Executes company’s monthly calendar of events to include Business Builders, point-of-purchase actions/events. Recommends changes to marketing/promotional plans as determined by specific market needs. Markets the store by passing out flyers, performing PA announcements, and executing Business Builder events.
  • MERCHANDISING: Ensures daily that the store is prepared, planograms and store displays meet guidelines and are maintained, lab processes and equipment requirements are determined and communicated, and dispensing/customer satisfaction follow-up requirements are communicated and monitored. Ensures store merchandise and housekeeping standards are met, including signage and proper merchandise display. Maintains an acceptable store inventory shrink percentage and notifies DM and RSC of inventory losses. Approves all replenishment of supplies and return of merchandise.
  • MANAGED CARE: Understands managed care programs to include plans available, PBS utilization, POS procedures, and plan specifics.
  • STORE OPERATIONS & CASH MANAGEMENT: Ensures cash management compliance by supervising/monitoring accuracy and timeliness of POS transactions, entries, and orders; reviews age balance reports; monitors cash closing records and other cash management reports and policies. Responsible for daily bank deposits.
  • SAFETY: Maintains a safe, clean environment for associates and customers. Ensures all federal/state safety laws and regulations are conformed to and records maintained. Makes a consistent deliberate effort to produce safe conditions in every phase of the store’s operations. Ensures that associates are performing their work in such a manner as not to jeopardize the safety and health of themselves, fellow-associates, customers, the public, or the environment. Effectively handles, reports, and resolves all safety concerns, unsafe or hazardous conditions, and injuries/accidents. Ensures that each new associate undergoes NVI’s Safety Training.
  • RECORDS AND REPORTS: Reviews store operational records and POS reports daily and ongoing to project sales and to maximize productivity and store profitability. Ensures all federal/state posting requirements are met and records retained. Ensures company manuals are updated according to schedule. Maintains mandatory OSHA log files at the store.
  • POLICY COMPLIANCE: Directs compliance of associates with established company policies, procedures and standards such as safekeeping of company funds and property, personnel policies and practices and grievance procedures, and adheres to policies governing federal/state laws and audit requirements.
  • SHIPPING AND RECEIVING: Plans for shipment and deliveries, follows-up to ensure receiving procedures comply with company policies and that timely distribution to customers is occurring.
  • SECURITY: Inspects the premises of assigned area stores to ensure that adequate security exists and that physical facilities comply with safety and environmental codes and ordinances. Reports security problems to DM, host Store Manager, and Retail Support Center. Locks and secures store.
  • OTHER DUTIES: Completes other responsibilities as assigned by DM, RVP, or other upper level management. Limited travel is required in this position.
Job Requirements:
  • State Optician License / Certification required.
  • Optical experience demonstrating reliability and above average performance.
  • 1-3 years of retail management experience.
  • Advanced skills in supervision, communication, selling, and ways to generate sales.
  • Ability to analyze financial data in order to identify trends and problem areas that need to be addressed.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Solid training abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time that may average 6-8 hours.
  • In some locations, bilingual abilities preferred.
  • Must be available to work most weekends.
