    Blue Jumper Former patterns........................

The only software you need to make patterns is your brain and your fingertips and as tools you need a ruler and a permanent ink pen and also a pair of scissors and a sanding disk.

Get a bag of former blanks from a supplier and start. After having done and messed up a few you get the hang of it. Your 3rd of 4th try will allready look better and more centered. Once you know it all you can do them in a brreeze.

Yep, I remember back in the day when large faceted drilled rimless were all the rage crafty opticians made their own just like Chris described.

The software is part of the edger system so you need both to do that kind of thing.

Pattern blanks have a grid system stamped on them to help guide you.
You will probably want to start with a lens that is roughly the shape that you want and then alter it.
Keep the lens centered vert and horiz. around the center holes.
We have made squares, circles, clouds and hearts.
Use a SUPER FINE POINT Sharpie with a dark ink.
Cut to rough size using big scissors or cutting shears.
Switch to a coarse file or use the perfect tool for the job your edger wheels.
Finish off running it around your hand stone for a nice smooth edge.
With practice you will get quite good at it and making a pattern is actually sort of rewarding...

I JUST tossed out our box of blanks (saved about 5) the other day or I'd volunteer to send you some.

You can also take a regular pattern and remove parts of it to be a new shape. Or you can take two patterns and superimpose one shape over another to create a new shape. That's what I did when I designed a frame shape for Logo Paris - the top of the shape fit the Beta chassis, while the bottom of the shape derived from the Lambda shape. Voila! New official shape. I wish I could remember the name they gave it. Logo also used one I adapted from the Maurice-St-Michel 101 shape that Logo named Nimbus.

For string mount frames, trace the top (galley-side) of the lens on a pattern blank, then place the shape of a template close to the desired shape and size over the pattern blank, and trace the bottom. Make a CR 39 sample lens, refine by hand, store the shape, make another lens, and keep going until you get what you want.

Be sure to store the final result.

When I was younger I used to do 1-300 sit-ups a day and about 50 push-ups kept the shape nicely customised. Later in life I created my custom shape snacking on the couch with the remote for exercise.
I once thought of a 15lb. remote for red-neck exercise but never made one.

still do them by hand. I take a piece of thicker paper (card stock) and trace the demo lens, then adjust shape from there, cut it out of the card stock, trim until i like it, then transfer it on to a pattern blank and cut it out.

Very good :) I do the same except sometimes I get really creative and ignore the demo lens shape.

the only time i ignore the demo is when its a drill mount. but I still use the demo to locate the holes easier on drill jobs.

Most metal and semi-rimless frames can be reshaped very easily, that's why pliers were invented. I do agree with using the demo to locate drill holes....sometimes.

Computer aided design is nice, but some of us are more artist than computer tech. I still say the best way for most of us is to do this the old fashion way. CAD and CAM software costs big $$$$$. I can make as much doing things by hand, just takes more creativity. I can even do this while sitting at Ole's having a beer and a donut. :)

Shoot, I thought you ment making a rimmed frame and lens to match. Custom Shapes for three piece rimless are so simple I am supprised anyone even asked the question. If you are not adept enough to make your own patters, you can always find a frame with a shape you like, rimmed or rimless and send it to your lab with a note saying: "Use this frame and use this lens/frame for the shape.
You would really have been in trouble back in the day when the hippies and pseudo-hippies were wearing flower shapes and the shape of the State of Texas.
