We need to band together against VSP DAVIS Spectera NVA and keep a watchful eye on that Eyemed so luxottical doesn't choke us.

I can't believe how little attention this is getting. Are we that apathetic?

Just curious--how many Optiboarders don't take any insurance of any kind? I love being in a self-pay only office. In 36 years, my doc has not taken insurance, and won't ever.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

What about the part where VSP says they are the largest NOT for profit vision care provider. The way our industry has gone all independents will be non profit.

I and others take no insurance. But, from what I hear, in california, this could be tough!

Any wagers on how long it will take to expand beyond CA?

Wow!! This is so terrible for all those OD's that bought into the VSP partner story. I hope that those practices with 80%+ VSP feel it was worth it to sell out for all those "big" re-imbursements they got for all these years and made some provisions for when they turned on you. He he, I feel really bad, no really, I do.:D

Scary. We all talk about government bureaucracy, but these insurance companies seem to be more bureaucratic.

Who receives these cards? I'm surprised to see it, not surprised VSP did it, but usually VSP members don't even get an ID card. I find that a lot of VSP members don't even know they have VSP until questioned about their insurance.

    I can't wait to hear racethe1320's response..

    * Hey, it's only one store.

    * This is simply a vertical move. Davis and EyeMed have retail locations, don't they?

    * By having retail options, we're answering the call of the consumer for more options. VSP will be able to better compete with other providers, thus putting more butts in your exam chair. ( I love the fuzzy logic of this one..)

    * We still love you OD's! You can come work in OUR corporate environment at one of OUR locations! (You already are...you know this, right?)

Whatever excuse they come up with for this one will be an exact duplicate of the reasons to go on-line with insurance glasses. (provided by them, of course).

WTF are they talking about in that Powerpoint slide, "any retail chain"? Sure they can apply for out of network reimbursement, but that isn't the same as the patient being "covered" there or the insurance being accepted. That's dishonest as hell.

Wow! My heroes, Fezz and Johns predicted exactly what is happening. In fact, I think that Fezz's signature is exactly what you just said. I can't believe how right on the money those guys were!

If they had the nerve to do it, there's no better time for OD's to boycott VSP than right now. (But you know they won't.)

    A little digging produces this...

The LifeConnections Health Center is an innovative onsite medical facility for Cisco employees and their families.

    http://www.cisco.com/web/lchc/index.html

This is not a typical retail venture, but a targeted one for Cisco employees.

The only thing that surprises me is that their initial venture is so small. I thought for sure they were going to buy a chain, still think they will.

You mean the one where everyone was outraged and the deal went through anyway?

We are. Sadly just being angry doesn't actually accomplish anything.

How dare you interject logical research into an emotionally charged anger/rant thread..... :p

So, it isn't a typical retail venture. However, it makes excellent business sense. VSP is targetting ONLY those with VSP insurance to give their money directly to them, rather than go to a VSP OD. That way VSP doesn't have to worry about reimbursments/paperwork/etc., it's all done direct. I do expect to see more of these, but I think they will be similar to what they did here: build an integrated location IN a larger business facility (probably one where ~80%+ of the employee's have VSP) and target those specific employees. Essentially they are only taking business away from other VSP providers....
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
