Now that the RANGERS are leaving Charlotte County Stadium......
Actually, Baseball left me along time ago........
Thank God for NASCAR!:D
Back in the late 70's early 80's, I used to actually keep a scorecard while I'd watch the Phillies play (Pete Rose was and is my favorite player of all time). My grandfather was really big into coaching and watching "Legion Ball" (American Legion sponsored teams). He'd take me to the games teach me how to keep score, all the rules, and how to be a good sport one game at a time (one of my cardinal rules of life is still "The Ump is always right!").
:D
Strangely enough, baseball is the one game I'd rather listen to on the radio than watch on TV.
The baseball strike(s) really put a damper on the game for me. However, since moving to Tallahassee, I have found a new passion for the game at the collegiate level. Going to watch the Seminoles play at Dick Howswer stadium is a blast (10 minute drive to the game, free parking, $4.00 to get in- and they usually give my 7 year old son free admission). I can munch peanuts, eat a hot dawg, and let Pierce "go for the cycle" (i.e., managing to eat aqua, pink, AND yellow cones of cotton candy during the same game) all while I work on my tan and watch players who are still enthusiastic carry on America's past-time! (We'll be going to the ballpark on Monday night to watch FSU clobber Duke, if anyone cares to join me.)
I still catch MLB games on ESPN, and my favorite team is still the Reds (who are doing okay the past few weeks). I enjoyed last year's series a lot (I can't stand the Yankees).
Hockey is okay come playoff time, but I can't really get into basketball- even during the playoffs (its just a matter of seeing whether the Lakers actually manage to lose one game during their run to a three-peat anyway). The last time I enjoyed the NBA, Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Parrish, and McHale were still battling guys like Kareem, Cooper, Rambis, and Magic.
I watch NASCAR so I will have SOMETHING to discuss with my brothers and dad (who are fanatics). For me, FALL is the season for sports- College Football, Pro Football, and the World Series, ahhhhhhh! (I almost added "on crisp, cool Fall afternoons, but afternoons here aren't all that crisp in the Fall.)
Anyone planning on watching the Kentucky Derby, btw? Its billed as the "most exciting two minutes in sports!"
