Today I recieved a job....SV poly with AR. The right len only has a manufacturer's mark very much like the mark that identifies a progressive lens. I noticed it while checking the glasses in for dispense. In all of my years in the business I have never seen a mark like this on an SV lens. To anyone who works in a lab...is this indicative of anything? I sent the job back with the mark circled in grease pencil to be remade. I would have called but they were closed for the day.
Is it a digital SV lens? What was the mark?
I've seen aspheric designs with mfg marks indicating a 180 for surfacing - but they're usually on the back side of the blank so they're long gone once off the generator.

It was an aspheric plus SV poly. The mark was at the nasal and in about 5mm on the OD only and pretty visible. It looked like an S with a box around it. It is an employee's glasses and she doesn't want the mark there. Not sure if a customer would have noticed it.
Sounds to me like the lab only paid attention to the axis on the one lens. When we usesd to do the Sola aspherics we'd always make sure the mark was on the temporal side, less noticeable.

All of Sola's Aspheric lenses have the mark, and, as Dragon said, the lab will usually try to lay it out so that it cuts out.
KBCo's (Essilor) Xperio polarized lenses are available with and without engravings on the 180 line, which is nice when a lens doesn't have the ink marks and the notches have been cribbed off.
And of course, all Free Form Single Vision will have engravings as well.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
Quality hi index stock lenses even have these engravings nowadays. And depending on the axis, decentration and frame size, may interfere with visual field - sometimes is a BIG P.I.T.A.!
Why would have these remade? There are many reasons for these types of markings on SV lenses. The lab guys will sure get a laugh at this, It will lighten their Monday, passing these around, with the grease marks. Bet you sent the first progressives back, cause you could not get the ingravings off. Ha HA HA!!
Yes, but.....if people are paying for a high quality lens and the mark is visible and or interferes with vision...then it should be remade. There isn't a logical requirement for the mark to be present. This is the same with another Zorro company that puts their logo on glass SV lenses that are so noticeable, they can be seen from 3 feet away, or the N company's logo that shows up when the lenses fog, or the V company that spells out their brand "in full" about 10 mm above the temporal engraving on multifocals..............IF it ain't required for verification, it shouldn't have to be there, as acceptable.
These also aren't billboards, folks.
