    Trivex

I know there was a thread about 9 years ago about Trivex, but I wanted to bring this back up. Who out there uses Trivex (as opposed to Poly)? In cases where impact resistance blah blah etc. is needed, is cost/availability the only deterrent for staying away from Trivex? - It would seem to me that Trivex would be a preferable material to poly given abbe, spidering, etc. Thoughts?

Two downsides to trivex...cost and the fact that it is thicker than poly.

We will only do drill mounts in Trivex, nothing else.

We only use Trivex here except in VSP jobs....In years past VSP offered a copay to upgrade to Trivex that was usually only about 15 dollars more than Poly but with the changes this year most plans only offer a 20% discount on Trivex while the Poly remains around 30 or sometimes even fully covered...I wish VSP and other insurances would embrace Trivex and realize its an optically superior material but I doubt they care when they can get junk Poly for so cheap.

I really like the Trilogy NuPolar by Younger. The colour is better than poly. I also prefer trivex FT28 Trans. over poly.

I do wish prices would come down a bit. (Don't we all!)

Trivex is only ligher up to about a -10.00. After that, the increase in material due to lower index increases the weight enough that a poly lens becomes lighter. Of course by that time, a higher index lens is ordered anyway.

And we're actually going to be lowering our Trivex prices.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.

According to Younger's monograph, that doesn't happen until -12.00 or so.

I ALWAYS use Trivex for kids, drill mounts and grooved rimless. Except, on a Trivex Trifocal, you can't put anything like Avance on it (At least that's what the 3 labs we use told me) I had to use Purecoat the other day..not too familiar with that so I hope it works well.

I've always been pleasantly surprised at the availability of trivex in flat tops/ tri-focals, especially in transition. I rarely use poly, but I'm not stictly anti-poly either.

Hoya will apply their top of the line Super Hi Vision EX3 to Phoenix(nee trivex) transitions FTs.

We do 82% trivex, 12% 1.67 and 6% 1.74. We don't even offer poly and have not for years.

If by "support" you actually mean "have an open enough mind to serve all our patients needs with far more than a single lens" then yes, I suppose you'd be correct. ;)

    Just yankin' your chain.:bbg:

I actually use only poly for all our medicaid customers. I don't even care if they're -12s and will have super-lousy optics, that's all they pay for.

I admit that I did not know it was a form of bisphenol A.

Say what? This is news to me, we charge the mid-index upgrade for trivex. Actually, i just double checked VSP and the new price chart lists non-aspheric
"Mid-index Plastic 1.53–1.59/Trivex" as option AB, 45 for SV and 51 for Multifocal.

Is it true that Trivex scratches easier than CR39?

Also, are there certain coatings that cause Trivex to lose its impact resistance?

I use Trivex when I can, especially for drill mounts. I'm supposed to be able to cut Trivex on my edger, but it makes such an angry noise I don't attempt it anymore. I really like to cut as much as I can in-house. If someone is using POF, I want to be able to service them later without having to unneccessarily change materials. :/
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I actually don't know the specific makeup of Trivex; but given it's impact resistance, I would assume that, uncoated, it would scratch easier than CR-39 (although, I've heard stories of Trivex being much more scratch-resistant than poly). I have no idea about coatings making it lose impact resistance...

No coating makes it lose it's impact resistance,

If you want the best of both worlds you could try Hi-vex (1.56 Trivex with a 48 abbe)

Not necessarilly true Braheem, it's specific gravity is 1.1- try matching that up with poly and tell us what you find.
