Managed care patients selecting frames that can't be discounted

How do you handle it when a managed care patient selects a frame or sunglass brand that doesn't allow discounting?

Is it handled differently when it's the first pair or when it's the second pair that isn't covered under the benefit?

    From the get go...

    "Can I help you?"

"Yes. I'm looking for a new pair of glasses."

"Have we seen you before so I can get your file and do you have any insurances or managed care plans that you'll be using today?"

    "Yes. I have XYZ."

"OK- Now that plan does limit you too..."

Maui Jims did not allow discounting as I recall but that didn't mean we didn't discount them when we wanted to. If you feel you cannot do that then you simply advise the patient that you have a contract with the frame company that does not allow discounting and they should choose another.

You can sell the sunglass frame at full price and put a better discount on the lenses. Most managed care plans we deal with don't cover plano shades.

You're correct. You cannot discount Maui Jims at all, that's stated in the contract. I had a patient today say, "Wow. That's expensive..so and so gave me a discount on them" I simply said, "Unfortunately, they are breaking the contract through Maui Jim that specifically states you cannot pass on discounts and that includes sporting stores that sells Mauis".

You also cannot use discontinued frames with VSP, I'm assuming it's the same with all insurances. We have a discontinued line of frames for patients that can use for a 2nd pair or contact lens patients, it's great for them as well. I have to also tell people, "Oh sorry..you cannot use any of these (pointing to the Aspex frames) with VSP either"

As far as discounts, it's up to you and the office what you give for 2nd pairs. Generally, most insurance companies pass on 20% multiple pairs as that is what we do as well. I have signs posted regarding 20% off multiple COMPETE pairs and it works like a charm!

    Hope that helps!

I always win this argument with all insurance companies. If the line does not allow discount Eyemed , Davis and others dont get ANY discount on those frames!
You are always welcome to get the frame from the tower....

Except you are still using a discount on the lens there.
