Top right of the screen is a "Settings" tab. Click on that. Left column under "Profile" is the "Edit Avatar" tab. When you click on that, it should bring up your current avatar, the option to import a custom avatar below that, and the "standard" avatars below that.
It may be that custom Avatars are only available after a certain post count (I've seen that on other forums, I'm not sure if it applies here or not).
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
Ok, now that I've been helpful, I can be grumpy that you didn't bother to check the Q&A forum first and find this thread: http://www.optiboard.com/forums/showthread.php/1906-Q-What-are-Avatars which is one of the first in that forum.
And I was right, custom avatars aren't available until after you've reached 100 posts.

And the avatar has to be reduced to a small size.
