    Bowl sizes on cataract lenses

I got a call from one of my mold customers wanting to know if we can make high base cataract molds for him (yes, we can), but he couldn't answer what width bowl...

He goes up to 12 base in a full field right now, and would be adding 14, 16, 18 base immediately, then up to 28 base as time permits. He plans on casting in CR-39 as well as a mid-range index.

Any thoughts on what bowl sizes you'd like to see? My only limitation is the thickness of the mold glass we have to work with.

How about some small ones (the steeper the base the smaller they have to be) for children with very high plus Rx's and very small frames? As they get larger there is little point to thier being lenticular.

I just checked my main Far East supplier and their standard is 38mm. I thought I remembered AO as using 40mm on glass lenses back in the 60's & 70's. Chip is right about smaller bowls for children, AO made 28 - 34mm for children born with cataracts and other high plus uses. Again, let me know, I may need some of them someday.

34 seems to be the standard size from where we get ours, but my supplier has everything from 20 to 44.

I third Chip's suggestion of smaller bowls for children.
There are rules. Knowing those are easy. There are exceptions to the rules. Knowing those are easy. Knowing when to use them is slightly less easy. There are exceptions to the exceptions. Knowing those is a little more tricky, and know when to use those is even more so. Our industry is FULL of all of the above.
