Are prices listed for lenses for a single lens or for a pair of lenses?

Hi, I've been a practicing optometrist for 8 years now at a retail chain and have taken the leap to private practice by myself! So although I have many years of experience writing Rxs, I've not worked in an optical since I worked at a chain selling glasses while in optometry school. I respect the opinions of those on this board and am embarrassed to have what I know to be a silly question. I have the frames on the boards and am now trying to determine what to charge for lenses. I have a price book from my lab but am wondering, is the price quoted per lens? And is the reimbursement from insurance usually for a pair of lenses or just one? I know that it may depend on plan or from lab to lab, but wondering in general what is usually done.
Clarification would be very helpful. Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it. Stephanie

Please do not post wholesale prices on the public forum

The prices are usually for a PAIR!

Thank you so much for your reply. I have edited the post and removed the prices, and I realize that was a mistake and I'm sorry. Thanks again for your help and have a nice evening. -S

Prices are always per pair for labs and third party plans. You might want to get more than one wholesale lab to deal with. You want competitive pricing, quick delivery, and quality work.If you deal with a smaller lab that is local you may negotiate a lower price for volume work. Good luck in your new venture and you can PM me for more info on lens pricing.

FYI- If you provide any post-op DME, Medicare is billed and pays per lens.

Leave it to the government to impose more confusion.

:idea:As always frames are sold by the pair:idea:

Best wishes with your new venture !

I beg to differ...up here on the Northern side of Lake Erie, Essilor and Nikon both post prices in 'per lens' format. It's very confusing to decipher since the other 98% of the optical world work in 'per pair'. Probably just part of their 'clear as mud' marketing plan.

In the UK all prices from the prescription houses are per lens. In the retail world it varies from practice to practice.

When someone quotes per lens it probably means there charging too much. Oh Ms. jones you wanted two lenses in your glasses?
Remember when carpet was priced per sq yd?

    Dr Stephanie,
You are going to hire a competent optician, right? Right? I mean, this question is so basic.

I have found when dealing with private labs, ask for 2nd pair discounts (when ordered at the same time , like 1/2 price) and even if they don't have a redo policy, they'll generally give you 1 redo for free (within reason) if they think you'll walk otherwise. They seem NEVER to give you the best deal unless they think they'll lose you!

I find this redo policy quite strange. Over here the labs will only redo a job if THEY have made a mistake, not if the optometrist/doctor/optician has made a mistake. Why should they? And why not price in single lenses, don't you replace single lenses over there, or does everyone have to buy 2 lenses even when there is a change in prescription in one eye, and the frame and other lens is in perfectly good order? Or what if a px only requires a varifocal lens in one eye and a balance S/V in the other? Do you charge for a pair of S/V and a pair of varifocals? Surely not.

All warranties.........redos first apir,,,,,,,,,second pair and on and on are the base for higher prices. There is never any give away for free, it is all charged and paid for in original price.

So you could actually demand, and receive and pay considerable lower prices from labs and suppliers if you do not want their warranties. That goes for frames as well as lenses.

Although they price per pair, if only one lens is ordered, we are only charged for the ONE lens. As far as the redo, why shouldn't they offer a free redo? Just another way of keeping us satisfied. If THEY don't, someone else will. Unless of course their prices are rock-bottom. Same as offering no charge to patients for a dr's change one time, which I assume most of us do.

Here they price per pair. But when I first got into the business, about half priced per lens and half priced per pair.

I"ve always wanted to open my own optical shop with full digital freeform lab in the back and sell glasses for just above cost with no warranty. One of my "if I win the lotto" plans, which will never happen because I never play.

I'm not sure which price list you have, but I have current lists 2010 for both Nikon and Essilor and are per lens.

Perspectics out of Winnipeg and KW out of Thunder Bay. Both Essilor owned. However, I do remember Nikon sticking with per lens.

What would be interesting would be a price list comparison......I know that lens sales reps have 3 or 4 different "published" price lists...and the one sent to you may be different than your neighbour's. Most are published with a combination of "per lens" and "per pair" sections, depending on the lens type, available treatments, processes. Only a poorly designed pricelist wouldn't be clear about whether the cost is per lens or per pair!

Good luck in your adventure, eyedoctor03.....may the optical gods smile upon your practice, and may all your base curves face the wind.

Ahh, that explains it. The ones I have are Essilor direct - not Essilor owned subsidiary divisions.
