    1. Who cares?
    2. Do you enjoy rubbing salt in the wound for all legitimate professionals on this forum?
    3. Their long term plan is not sustainable - the free promo proves it.

Statistics show once a person has a had a product or service for free, they will never want to pay for it in the future. Simply a desperate marketing campaign.

If they were truly going to give something away, call it a donation and target it to those less fortunate requiring the service.

The more freebies they give out, the faster they will go under. This is an unsustainable ploy. I urge everyone to take part in this - the cost goes directly to their bottom line without any profit.

yeah... if all the optical professionals ordered the free glasses, we could use up the 10,000. Then we could donate them to VOSH or GOS. What a plan.

I disagree. This is, IMHO, a terrific marketing plan.

You'll believe me when all the media, including social, kick CC's recognition past Zenni in but a few weeks time.

    Way to go, Coastal!

Coastal is performing a very important public health experiment for us. We'll be interested in seeing how it turns out in several years.

Meanwhile, we'll also see what the price/revenue Laffer curve is for eyewear sales.

The code is 10000USA now there is no need to sign up on their facebook page and divulge your information for future marketing. It's actually pretty smart, CC is going to give away cheap frames, but you have to read the fine print to figure that out, by the time you figure that out they have your information and they'll send you promotions throughout the year so you get bombarded.

Now they have a large segment of the USA who wear glasses and they have information on. They'll send you second pair offers and sunwear offers and your first experience with them is obviously going to be satisfying since they were FREE. Plus the future communications with you through FB cost their marketing department next to nothing, genius.

Barry is correct, this is a clever marketing ploy. This is a very old & very effective marketing 101 technique called "Loss Leader Pricing". While not necessarily applicable for all products, ALL major retailers employ this to some products to a very successful degree.

Not only does it create a tremendous increase in traffic and particularly important retailer name or brand recognition (which creates an economy of scale smaller retailers find growing insurmountable competition) , loss leaders can and efficiently are used as a way of competing for higher profit customers by offering them discounts that are not available to less profitable customers. Thus, loss leader pricing can be a way of price discriminating among groups of customers in a commoditized & competitive setting. And as we have seen, eyecare is unfortunately becoming more & more commoditized. More effectively than the traditional loss leader, it is neither necessary nor sufficient for a product to be sold under a well known brand, nor purchased by many customers. Rather a product could be priced as a loss leader if, in a market in which some customers purchase bundles of products that are more profitable than bundles purchased by others, the product is purchased primarily by customers that purchase more profitable bundles. The reason is that, for more profitable customers, sellers have an incentive to compete more vigorously to keep them from purchasing from another seller.

Look at turkey day coming up... at a time when demand is highest, turkey prices at at their lowest. Why? Turkeys are effective loss leaders, not only because almost every customer purchases a turkey at Thanksgiving, but because the customers that do purchase turkeys, on average purchase more units of other goods (that hold their regular or marked up margin) than do customers shopping at the same time that do not buy turkeys, and are thus more profitable.

And in this case here, the added "benefit", as Harry pointed out, is that they have, as of today, over 20,000+ new qualified prospects that gave them all the demographic & personal info they do not have to fish or pay for outright.

I am both personally & professionally not keen on the evolution of online eyewear, but... the only constant is change & all industries evolve in one form or another, good or bad.

The blacksmiths limiting their workload to shoes that did not diversify, did not prosper...
