The College of Opticians of Ontario has released it's 2009 annual report and shows an increase in their deficit to $ 307,000.00 . In the previous year they reported another deficit of $ 197,000.00 .

They are reporting $ 644,000.00 in legal bills for 2009 .

And still no results . Illegal chains still operate today without being in compliance. The judge continues to grant more and more delays .

Ontario Opticians , do you remember the huge license fee increases from the previous days of deficit spending ?

I think I heard that Great Glasses has cost Ontario Optometrists, and Opticians in excess of 3 million dollars. We must never surrrender. Use our money wisely, but NEVER GIVE up. I think they both must be out of reserves, I would gladly pay more to eliminate all illegal operations.

    Nice first post.

Welcome to the forum. It would be interesting to tally up the government tab for this fiasco, and the costs that will follow sentencing of Bergez.

In the normal corporate world, as a cost control measue (and amongst may other things) we would implement travel restrictions to contain costs to a minimum...why should the COO be any different?

Oh my, how is Ms. Power going to cope? Maybe this will expedite her resignation? Everybody please say your prayers.

Does flying to Geneva , Switzerland on the College budget really qualify as a College expense ?

How do they sleep at night when their gagged members have to pay their deficit ?

How do they justify not pursuing the other store operators in the chain ? After 6 or 7 years would you not think that the Discipline Committee might have charged all the individual stores, operators and employees with unauthorized dispensing ?

If there was money for Geneva then there must have been money available to pursue the operators of the other stores in the chain .

They seem pretty good at managing their money. Let's see how the college handles Clearly Contacts and other contact lens distributors, that sell to Ontario residents, over the internet. I smell another deficit.

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL They are not even remotely interested in stopping Clearly Contacts or other on liners !!! They want that ! Take a look at the BC FARCE ! They are essentially deregulated ! They did not lift a finger to stop that . They think it is a wonderful " opportunity " Read the Mary Field articles . How many BC opticians will renew their licenses ?

You hit the nail on the head idepense!

Clearly contacts, B&L and the opticians president are way to buddy-buddy on this. In the past the college was always coming down on illegal dispensers, but it seems the college doesn't care if illegal dispensing was or is occurring. Last year the colleges took clearly contacts to court, the outcome of the trial was that clearly contacts admitted they have no optometrists or opticians work for them. So they admitted to illegal activity and the college just let that go!!

So instead of hammering clearly contacts with illegal dispensing, now you have clearly contacts supplier B&L and the president of the regulatory college working together praising the wonders of B&L product? Ya...job well done.

Also a shocialist system will always take any program that is self supporting and turn a quick deficit.

Here is a question. If it increased its deficit by $110,000 and the deficit was mainly caused by $644,000 in legal bills, then this should be short term, shouldn't it? I am assuming the legal bills were a one time expenditure for Great Glasses. If that is true, then in future years, its legal bills will be much smaller, surplus should be had, and the deficit should be covered.

You are missing the point. There will always be something. They may go after someone else or give raises. There will always be a deficit. Just watch. Good examples are the schools or post offices in the US. Most government ran programs fit here.

That is not a point, that is an assumption.

I work for a government organization that surpluses every year.

I have to book a trip to attend the Opti-Fair in Hong Kong in November. Does anybody have that number for the COO travel agency? I hear they also provide 0% financing courtesy of its members.

Oh, hang on I found it.....1-416-COO-BANK

They haven't yet, and if they do, fine. If we are not doing anything with it, why should it be wasted?
