    Confirm VSP Rumor?......

We have some information lately that VSP has opened up a couple of retail establishments near some very large California businesses and hired OD's to start servicing those businesses directly. Can anyone confirm this rumor? The word is that one is in the Bay area near Cisco Systems and one in Central Cal. near the Norell building.

Here in Cali there is a lot of hush hush things going on with VSP so it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.

Just an other beast, beginning to eat her young...

In the private forum, someone made this statement:

"I think that will be a sad day for VSP if they require us to provide P.D's . I think many ODs would drop it, then."
This new model will prove (if there was ever any doubt), that there will always be an OD (could be any ECP), that will work for whatever is thrown their way. Rather than dropping VSP, the time will come when VSP will drop them.

There have always been some DOC's and Pearls owned by opticians that are VSP providers. They know how to play the game.

So what would do if VSP opened a bunch of retail stores?

This is a small independent shop near Rochester, Mn. It may have something to do with Mayo Clinic being in bed with VSP (among others). Mayo controls everything medical within about 100 miles of Rochester.

Even further than that Jacqui -- the local ambulance service here in St. Cloud: Gold Cross, bills through Mayo. I wonder how many others they control...

I haven't heard the California bit referenced in the topic, but it has been confirmed that VSP is testing several clients with CostCo benefits.

I gotta renew my subscription for that. I'm temporarily-- booted! You guys need to PM me everything on that forum, OK? NO! just kidding, I'll be there soon.

Anyone else want to chime in on this VSP thing ?? I'm gonna print this up for the boss tomorrow. I'm really not exactly sure what his concerns were about this.

The rumor about VSP and Cisco has been going around the SFC bay area for a few weeks.

VSP had a pilot program with Site for Sore Eyes (aka. Sterling) in California for a year or so. My guess, they're expand it to COSTCO (it wasn't that big a deal). Lots of talk and rumors about the COSTCO/VSP connection, but so far no facts have come out...

Last year VSP began quietly allowing a few Opticians to be VSP providers as a test. I believe there were 25 practices nationwide but that could be growing. There are also some that have been around a while and were grandfathered in (before VSP restricted themselves to OD and OMD's).

They did quietly allow a few under a specific program. They don't pay (reimburse) the Opticians like they pay the doctors, quite a bit less. And they have "sworn" the Opticians under this plan to keep their mouths shut about being part of this program. Only word of mouth marketing is allowed.
