    solar burning lens

I work at a lab and want to make a lens that I can use outdoors to burn wood. I want it to be super powerful, better than the strongest magnifying glass.

    How should I make it?

    Single Vison
    +15.00 SPH
Aspheric for Finer Focused Beam of Light?
AR Coat for reduced reflection / better light transmittance?

    ?Sound good? Or anything better?

    Thanks

parabolic dish might be a better aplication, the power of a lens is constrain by size as well as dioptic power

So would 70mm diameter uncut lens or 80mm diameter uncut lens be better ?

You can buy large Fresnel lenses that will melt asphalt and burn wood.

Get the fresnel lens out of an old projector TV and make a death ray!

If you had a +15 in an 80mm blank I guessing it would have to be asheric. I think you would lose your fine point focus.
Indepedant of power the total heat is a factor of lens size. Power determines the focal lenght. I bet someone here can do the math for optimization.

If it was me, I'd go for a bi-convex lens as strong as you can make it. Stick with spherical, you don't need to worry about the outer rays, the bi-convex design will take care of that.

How large of a focus spot do you want?

Make it out of glass.. A plastic lens might get hot enough to melt itself.

Would a lighter or matches be more suited to the task?:shiner:
It’s so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don’t say it.

I have a +28.00 bi-convex lense at the lab that I use as a "loupe". I'll have to take it out back and see if I can melt the asphalt.

I'd err on the side of caution here and make a bi-concave just in case you need to put out any fires.

Good thinking Ken, that will neutralize any fires started.

Or you can use this to see where you go, then light the fire.
