Nikon is majority owned by Essilor and has a French President. I think they are back about 6 or 7 pages, its easy to miss one or two companies though.

Essilor completes 19 Purchase Transactions in 2015, adding to already extensive portfolio of companies in different market segments, including Jai Kudo, but also:

PERC: The Professional Eyecare Resource Co-Operative/Infinity Vision Alliance (PERC/IVA), a group purchasing organization comprising more than 2,400 independent eyecare practices.

Vision Source: A huge buying group and network in the US

In Spain, the company acquired a majority stake in ECP, the distribution platform of CECOP, a group purchasing organization comprising around 800 domestic optical stores as well as operations in Italy, Portugal and the U.K.

Jai Kudo: In Poland, Essilor enhanced its mid-range ophthalmic lens offering with the purchase of Jai Kudo.

Essilor closed four transactions in Brazil:
Prime Optical, a major prescription laboratory in Rio de Janeiro with annual revenue of BRL 49 million, and RX, a Recife-based prescription laboratory in Pernambuco state, where the company did not yet have an operational presence, with annual revenue of around BRL 8 million. eÓtica, one of the country's leading online vendors of optical products (contact lenses, sunglasses and prescription glasses), and e-lens, a major online contact lens distributor. Based in Sao Paulo, eÓtica and e-lens generated revenue of around BRL 15 million and BRL 12 million respectively in 2015.

In Russia, the company purchased Optic Club, a contact lens distributor Optic Club's product offering and regional footprint will tie in well with Company Grand Vision, the distributor of ophthalmic lenses and contact lenses acquired in 2014.

in Kuwait, Nikon-Essilor has acquired a majority stake in Nikon Optical Middle-East (NOME), which is the exclusive distributor of Nikon brand lenses in the Gulf Cooperation Council states. This partnership marks Essilor's first entry into Kuwait.

I think within the next 3-5 years, they will own the majority if optometry chains and insurance ophthalmic providers. It is well time to go in for the kill.

Especially when you consider their partnership with Luxottica.

Just remember, they can't become a functional monopoly, the US DoJ will have a major issue with that in the US.

But does that count if they are not an American company?

They have 80% of the sales and they are not a monopoly? The VM Lab study is understated according to what the lab owners are telling me. E has more share than others are admitting. Z has almost nothing left, R is new in US again and H owns S and P so there is no one but H and E left. We are down to 2 major choices and one of them has 80% market share.
    Crazy Industry.

Yes, it does. DeBeers diamond monopoly is not allowed to do business in the US as a result of their monopoly status, even though they are not a US company. People find ways around it, but DeBeers is not allowed to do any direct business in the US as a result.

As of yesterday Shore (and by default Essilor) now have Polycore. Not that I used Polycore for anything other than FSV safety with AR. That's going to get annoying considering they were the only ones making that lens and Essilor doesn't plan to keep that lens in production though...

Not surprising really. The Transitions brand and demand for it peaked years ago coupled with hundreds of millions in marketing costs annually. Also, most other lens manufacturers globally have developed their own proprietary photochromic lens technology on their own brands that work just as good as Transitions.

Sales and marketing operations team will remain in North America, but all lens casting and imbibing are being shifted to Thailand as Chris says.

What a problem for Polycore patrons. The changes they make now when taking over a business are made with only "how may we better serve our Big E labs. They do not give a rats butt about the customers they cut off.

Redhot Jumper Manufacturing of Optical Lenses in Thailand ...............................

Manufacturing of Optical Lenses in Thailand

Optical Lenses' Manufacturing around the world.

Source : Thai Optical Group, and review in The Nation newspaper.

Whether you buy your new glasses in Thailand and elsewhere, there is a fair chance that the optical lesses you wear, have been manufactured in Thailand.

Thailand produces more than 20 % of the close to a billion optical lenses made each year. Besides local independent manufacturers, many foreign countries have factories located in Thailand. These include : Hoya Lens (Japan), Essilor Manufacturing (France), Rodenstock (Germany), Solarlens (Italy), Indo (Spain) and Transitions (U.S.A.). Local total production capacity is 200 million optical lenses.

A known local enterprise is Thai Optical Group, which produces optical lenses under its own brand names, and as an original-equipment-manufacturere (OEM) for other companies and brands. Thai Optical Group has an annual capacity at present of 27 million lenses.

Most of the raw material needed to produce optical lenses, has to be imported into the country, and has to be transported in refrigerated containers. The larger orders the country generates, creates lower costs per unit of production.

Large corporations in many fields have been working to get their goods manufactured in countries where labour is the cheapest. This has been going on for many years. The good we are selling are getting cheaper and cheaper to be produced, but not to be purchased by the consumer. The optical industry is mostly gone for good, unless governments will do something about it and force corporations to make some reversals.

That is why there are millions of people without work on this continent, on food stamps and in poverty.

The latest industry that has already moved parts manufacturing and is producing them in Asia are the automotive sectors.

    What do you say ?

Blue Jumper They can cut their cost big time....................................

What does it mean when those manufacturers move their production of lenses to Thailand ?

They can cut their cost big time.

Do you purchase their lenses now for less than you did 10 years ago?

However this allows them to sell them online for less as quite a few now also operate online opticals from Europe to Asia.

No they are not as far as I could figure out. It was just a interruption to show that not everything optical is concentrated in China.

However Essilor is still the strongest in Thailand and has made
    Transition lenses there for years.
