Is there something over the counter I can use in my lens washer other than the Freewash stuff Gerber markets?

check with Chris Ryser. I use alloy and don't need a lens washer
You might try JOY (dishwashing liquid). We use to use it to clean wax blocked lenses in places that did not have the Gerber washer. I don't know just how much you would use in the auto machine (just used a bucket with hot water) so you might need to experiment and not flood the lab with soap bubbles.

Please read through the post again - I said he could try it in the washer, as we use to use JOY in a "tub" after deblocking. I have no personal experience that it will work for sure, nor how much of it to use. It was just a suggestion for him to test - if he is inclined to do so.

Thanks J.R. I'll give it a try next chance I get, Chris.

Simple green is also a good product.
Better check the MSDS on Simple Green and any other product. Specifically, you'll need to verify what happens when the solution is heated to 140 degrees F like in the Gerber Lens Washer. Many consumer products were not meant to be heated.

I had forgot about Simple Green, Mr. Bowers. But I am old, so memory lapses are expected. Rick is correct on the MSDS sheet for Simple Green, but JOY/DAWN, etc. is expected to be heated. I would just be careful on the "amount" you use to avoid over sudsing (sp). Hope it works out for you.

Citrus cleaner/degreaser( 2CXR9 330 ?) From Graingers.
Hmmm....there's an idea, since I'm headed that way, Thanks.

Actually, it was a citrus degreaser that I had in mind to check the MSDS carefully. I ran across a lab once that was using a citrus degreaser in the Gerber Lens Washer, and it turned out that the product was putting out some nasty fumes. A check of the MSDS turned up the fact that it shouldn't be heated. That was a surprise to the lab...they just assumed because it was "natural" that it was safe in all applications.
Check the MSDS.

Copy that!

I tired everything from Simple Green to liquid dishwasher detergent - nothing worked. Either the heat altered the cleaner (Simple Green, Dawn, and the like) or the product wasn't intended to be used for 8 hours straight (liquid dishwasher detergent).
Freewash is about the only thing that works.
Depending on the volume of stuff being cleaned - it may be better if it does not last 8 hours. Wax buildup on the interior and on the brushes - does not mean clean items coming out. It is one of the reasons quite a few larger labs clean blocks in the washer... and lenses elsewhere. Wax is a real enemy for backside and AR coating devices.

BTW....plain old dishwasher gel seems to be working just fine.
