Transparent edge on Poly Polarized lenses

We polish the edge of every Poly lens since this has reduced dramatically the occurence of cracked lenses. I learned this from a post on this Forum.
But when edging a "V" bevel on a poly polarized lenses, if the groove of the frame is not deep enought (very deep), there is a transparent area betwen the dark front surface of the lens and the frame and some patients do not like that.
Any idea of how to avoid this?

Move the bevel forward.

The polarized film is under 1mm. As braheem said you move the bevel forward and choose a frame that covers more of the lens edge.

Bevel control is your friend if you must use poly. If you use NXT polarized it vanishes,. but in poly it is just part of the deal. You can paint the edges or we just left it alone and we never had any complaints using poly polarized for all of our sunwear.

The optics out of NXT and the lack of cracking is a good reason to try the NXT.

I use a 1.10 mm bevel from the front on my NOP 6E for all polarized. All of my RX work look like plano stock lenses from the front, no ring-around-the-polarized.

Polycore makes a polarized lens that has a slight tint to the lens substrate to match the polarized films color. This allows for very little visible difference when not positioning the bevel as mentioned.

I love this treatment. It makes sunglasses look seamless, and can be fantastic on a drill mount lens. I've got a few pairs with the edges colored the same color as the frame, and it helps the lenses disappear.

Chris Ryser sells a product called Edgeit, which colors the edge of polycarbonate lenses. There are several colors. It's based on his edge polish chemical. I haven't tried it yet, but I'll be ordering it next time I get something from Optochemicals

That may be a carcinogen.

Many chemicals and solvents are a carcinogen and are used in optical labs forever. That is why there are Material Safety Data Sheets and you use them according to the instructions, don't inhale them, don't drink them, use them in a ventilated area. Once the jobe is done there is no carcinogenic effect on the finished glasses.

If you are inhaling hot neutralizer vapours all day long you might get some kidney, liver and brain problems on a long term basis. Very few chemicals are in the healthy catergory, however they do a good job and can produce nice end results.

When edging polar-poly I always set my edger to a front bevel (1.0mm from the front). From 4-8FBC this works wonders. If I'm running a flatter FBC I edge to follow the frame curve and use a camo-pen to hid transparent edge (coloring the front of the bevel only).

So when the job is done there is no lasting effect except to the technition that applies the stuff, like many other chemicals used in the lab. I guess if the MSDS informs them of the risk, all is well. Oh. OK.

How bad do I have to b..b...b...b...be before I can go out on a W..w..w..workers Comp claim?? Do I have to shake all of the time or only when I'm at work? :shiner:

I would guess that when it hits you, you will decide what to do, and you doctors will help you and if it is too late the funeral parlor might be the last option.
